Plasma levels and urinary excretion of oxypurines--hypoxanthine and xanthine--were evaluated by reverse-phase high-pressure liquid chromatography in 13 patients affected by gastric tumors and in 19 colorectal tumor-bearing patients. Preliminary results indicate higher values of urinary xanthine and an increase in the xanthine/hypoxanthine ratio in cancer patients. The increase was not generalized to all subjects, and did not appear related either to the stage of the disease or to CEA values. The limits within which the determination of urinary oxypurines can be employed as a tumor marker are discussed.

We present a case of squamous-cells carcinoma of the inferior lip in a man at the age of 59 years, of particular interest either of the extension and infiltration of the neoplasia, of considerable longevity, since the patient had his first operation for the removal of the tumour. Fifteen years ago he had radiotherapy and it was found he had no visceral metastases. The outcome of the patient stage, had increased the neoplasia, which depended on the overall isolated condition in which he lived.
Levels of oxypurines (hypoxanthine and xanthine) and uric acid were measured in plasma and urine of tumor bearing patients (gastric and colon rectal tumors), and of subjects affected by non specific diseases. In both groups, an increase in plasma purine bases and a decrease of their excretion was observed as compared to healthy controls; no substantial variations concerning uric acid were found. Possible mechanisms inducing alterations of purine metabolism in so different conditions are discussed.
