Imidazolyl derivatives of enalapril as potential angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors.

The synthesis of a few derivatives of the angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor enalapril is described. In these molecules the chelating carbethoxy group is substituted with an imidazolyl one. The compounds were tested both in vitro and in vivo. None of them showed in vivo activity but only a marginal in vitro inhibitory activity.

Synthesis and pharmacological evaluation of poly(oxyethylene) derivatives of 4-isobutylphenyl-2-propionic acid (ibuprofen).

The synthesis of three oligomeric derivatives of 4-isobutylphenyl-2-propionic acid (ibuprofen), namely, the monoester of tetraethylene glycol (I) and the diesters of poly(oxyethylene) samples having molecular weights of 1000 (+/- 50) and 2000 (+/- 150) (II and III), has been performed via the imidazolide method. The antiinflammatory activity of I-III, and of equivalent amounts of free drug, was determined in the carrageenan-induced rat paw edema assay at different times after oral administration and found to be considerably prolonged in the case of the three derivatives. The lowest molecular weight derivative (I) also had an enhanced initial activity with regard to 4-isobutylphenyl-2-propionic acid. These results were confirmed by measuring the plasma levels of 4-isobutylphenyl-2-propionic acid in rats at different times after oral administration.

[Proposal for an informed consent form for hormonal replacement therapy in ambulatory care].

Hormonal Replacement Therapy (HRT) represents a valid therapeutic approach for menopausal symptoms and for the prevention of cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis. Nevertheless, an informed consent, after a complete information, must be obtained from the patient. This procedure is generally adopted in any medical activity, but the modality of the consent in the HRT administration is not well established (verbal or written?, timing of administration?). The authors propose an informed written consent model to be utilized in menopausal centers; this model synthetically informs about HRT benefits and risks and must be red and signed by the patient. The written consent should be explained through a verbal detailed discussion about it, during which the patient's comprehension must be assured. The informed consent procedure should be renewed every year in long term-users. The influence of the HRT informed consent in menopausal centers must be analyzed in particular as far as women compliance is concerned.

Morphological observations on the glands of the oesophagus and stomach of adult Rana esculenta and Bombina variegata.

Examination of serial sections of the oesophagus and stomach of Rana esculenta and Bombina variegata revealed that oesophageal peptic glands were only present in Rana, where gastric glandular cells performed only one functional role, represented by HCl production. In contrast, in Bombina the gastric glands were mainly of oxynticopeptic cells with dual oxyntic and peptic roles, reflected morphologically by distinct different areas of their cytoplasm. During activity of the oxynticopeptic cells cytoplasmic differences were reduced because the tubular profiles, carrying HCl, and zymogen granules emerged at the cell apex.
