EXPERIMENTAL LATHYRISM. AN AUTORADIOGRAPHIC STUDY.

In normal and lathyritic chick embryos bone collagen was synthesized primarily in the periosteum of the femurs, and was organized as radioactive spicules in these bones. Saline extraction of the lathyritic bones removed the radioactive spicules, although they eventually seemed to become non-extractable. Normal bone seemed to be unaffected by saline extraction. Marked variation in the degree of isotope incorporation was seen in collagenous and non-collagenous tissues. All the tissues of any one embryo, however, showed a similar degree of isotope incorporation. Tritiated beta-aminopropionitrile was diffusely distributed throughout bone and was completely removed by saline extraction. This autoradiographic study supports the postulate that a portion of extractable lathyritic collagen is recently synthesized and is organized in fibrous structures in bone.

OSTEOCLASTS: ORGANIZATION IN CHICK EMBRYO BONE.

A multinucleated endosteum was observed in the long bones of chick embryos aged 14 to 17 days. The endosteum appears to be responsible for extensive bone resorption; the bulk of the diaphyseal bone is almost completely replaced during this particular 3-day interval. Eventually, the endosteum appears to be transformed into numerous individual osteoclasts. Both the endosteum and the osteoclasts are found almost entirely on the medial surfaces of the innermost bone spicules and they seem to destroy collagen by extracellular proteolysis.

ABERRANT THYROID TISSUE IN THE MOUSE.

Aberrant thyroid tissue was observed at the base of the heart in seven of 2634 mice of the BALB/c strain. Such tissue was not seen in any of 1033 mice of the Strong A strain. The normal thyroid gland of the BALB/c mouse was observed to be more loose than that of the Strong A mouse and isolated follicles were frequently observed in tissue sections at either pole of the gland which were not attached to the body of the thyroid.
