Target role of Langerhans cells in mycosis fungoides: transmission and immuno-electron microscopic studies.

Langerhans cells of the epidermis are "special" macrophages, as indicated by their expression of Fc and C3 receptors and Ia antigen. Functionally, they can replace macrophages in presentation of antigens to T cells and in the MLR. Ultrastructural and immunologic studies were carried out on epidermal samples of mycosis fungoides. As in contact allergy, apposition of lymphocytes to Langerhans cells was noted. Destruction of Langerhans cells appeared to act as the focus for the development of Pautrier microabscesses. This destruction was accompanied by ingress of histocytic cells, probably related to the stem cell population for Langerhans cells. The target cell role of Langerhans cells appears to be similar in contact allergy and mycosis fungoides.

Management of recurrent aphthous stomatitis. A review.

The management of recurrent aphthous ulceration is discussed. It appears that the treatment of choice in mild to moderately severe aphthous stomatitis is repeated application of topical tetracycline hydrochloride. Viscous lidocaine (2 percent) provides symptomatic relief and is therefore a useful adjunct to therapy. Cyclical estrogens appear to be helpful in recurrent premenstrual aphthosis. Immune-regulating agents such as levamisole hold promise for the future.

Administration, Topical

Hidrotic ectodermal dysplasia with diffuse eccrine poromatosis.

Eccrine poromatosis (EP) of remarkable severity has been observed in a patient with hidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (HED), a member of the kindred originally described by Clouston. Neither the EP nor its association with HED has been previously reported.

Adult

Dermatitis herpetiformis and leiomyomas with HLA-B8, a marker of immune diseases.

Multiple cutaneous leiomyomas and dermatitis herpetiformis (DH) were found in the same patient. This association has not been previously described, although the association of malignant tumours and DH is well known. HLA-B8 was found in this patient as well as in an older brother with polymyositis; this antigen is known to be associated with other immune diseases.

Dermatitis Herpetiformis

Autoantigens in human sweat: purification and characterization of the D-group antigens.

We have found several heteropolysaccharides in human thermal sweat which are both autoantigenic and isoantigenic for a majority of healthy adults. They are present in trace amounts and are difficult to isolate. We have facilitated extraction through the use of a DEAE-Sephadex batch technique. One of the major antigenic fractions, the D group, has been purified and characterized. It contains 88.5 per cent carbohydrate as uronic acid, hexosamine, methyl pentose, and glucose. The protein content was 12.5 per cent.

Expression of c-myc protein in skin and synovium in psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis.

Monoclonal antibody against c-myc protein was used in the avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex procedure to examine frozen sections of psoriatic and normal skin and psoriatic synovium for the presence of c-myc protein. A significantly greater percentage (88%) of epithelial cells from psoriatic skin lesions stained for c-myc than uninvolved skin (62%) from both psoriatics and normals (p less than 0.001). The intensity of the stain appeared weaker in normal skin specimens. Greater than 95% of psoriatic hyperplastic synovial lining cells stained strongly for c-myc. In all cases, the c-myc staining was confined to the nuclei with no evidence of cytoplasmic staining.
