We report a rare case of primary cutaneous myxoid melanoma. Histologically, the tumour was composed of spindle and stellate-shaped cells, embedded in a myxoid stroma. Positivity for S-100 protein and the presence of melanosomes were demonstrated in the tumour. Primary cutaneous myxoid melanoma is rare. This is the second report of such a case.
Smoking, response to allergen skin testing, and nonspecific airways reactivity in students entering a career program for animal health technicians (AHT) were studied at their entrance and 7 months into the program to determine whether such persons provide a suitable cohort to overcome the selection biases accompanying investigations of occupational asthma. Previous occupational exposure to animals (65%) was associated positively with allergic symptoms but negatively with skin response to animal allergens and to airway hyperreactivity (AR). AHTs remaining in the program were more likely than those dropping out to have (1) worked with animals, (2) positive skin responsiveness to animal allergens, and (3) AR; the latter was significantly associated with positive skin-test responses to animal allergen testing. This study demonstrates that significant exposure to animals may have occurred among workers entering animal-handling careers. Additionally, competing "healthy" and "resistant" worker effects operate among AHTs to influence the prevalence of occupational asthma in this population.
17 alpha-Iodo-vinyl oestradiol binds with high affinity to the oestrogen receptor, is metabolically stable and has been shown to accumulate in oestrogen sensitive tissues of rodents. We have synthesised this compound and its 3-acetate, labelled with carrier free 125I and shown the accumulation of both compounds in rat uterus. 17 alpha-Iodo-vinyl oestradiol-3-acetate was prepared labelled with carrier free 131I and administered to twelve patients with suspected breast cancer, approximately 1 h before surgical removal of the primary tumour mass. At the time of surgery a sample of the tumour and a peripheral blood sample were taken. The ratio of radioactivity in the tumour to blood was determined. All tumours accumulated radioactivity and ratios ranged from 1.5:1 to 3.7:1. There was no correlation between the degree of accumulation and either cytosolic oestrogen or progesterone receptor concentration in the tumour. Analysis of blood revealed a single circulating species, 17 alpha-iodo-vinyl oestradiol. The results show that 17 alpha-iodo-vinyl oestradiol is metabolically stable and accumulates in breast tumours though this accumulation is not sufficient to permit imaging.

The peroxidase (EC 1.11.1.7) and iodinase (EC 1.11.1.8) activities of rat submaxillary gland were found to be increased after thyroidectomy. The enzyme activities were maximal on the seventh day after operation and then decreased slightly. However, the enzyme activities were still more than 100% even 28 days following operation. Administration of thyroxine (10mug/100 g body weight) prevented the increase. Puromycin, cycloheximide, and actinomycin D, the inhibitors of protein synthesis, as well as thiouracil partially abolished the increase of activities. These results suggest that thyroxine acts as a regulator of the iodinase and peroxidase enzyme(s) of submaxillary gland,
