Camel production in Kenya and its constraints. I. Productivity.

Initial results from an ongoing study of the productivity in three herds of camels are presented. The effects of different management systems, traditional nomadic vs. commercial ranching, on growth, fertility and early mortality are described as well as the differences in the genetic potential of two types of indigenous camels.

Camel production in Kenya and its constraints. II. Tick infestation.

The tick loads and tick species infesting an experimental herd, a Rendille pastoralists' herd and two ranch herds of camels, in four different areas of Kenya are described. The tick species most commonly observed were Hyalomma rufipes, Hyalomma dromedarii and Rhipicephalus pulchellus.

A simple classification of different types of trypanosomiasis occurring in four camel herds in selected areas of Kenya.

Camels from herds in four different areas of Kenya were sampled at regular intervals over periods of 9-15 months and examined for the presence of trypanosomiasis. Five hundred and eight camels divided into three age categories were studied. Trypanosomiasis caused by T. evansi, T. brucei and T. congolense was shown to be present in varying degrees in all the herds. Camels were divided into 5 types according to mortality, the presence or absence of circulating trypanosomes and antibody, and the presence or absence of emaciation and anaemia. Herd profiles were constructed according to the percentage of the different types over the whole of their respective study periods. Results indicated that camels in some herds show a calf-hood resistance to trypanosomiasis in endemic areas and that the disease may be present in a relatively stable situation. Some of the implications of these results are discussed.

The effect of conditioning the medium in DRosophila, in relation to frequency-dependent selection.

In the context of frequency-dependent selection, the effect of conditioning the medium, by the previous culture of larvae of a given strain, on the survival of subsequent larvae of the same or different strains was measured. Six strains were sued, some inbred and some lines selected for low or high sternopleural bristles. The survival of larvae was not significantly less when the food had been conditioned by the same strain rather than by another strain, nor did conditioning by one strain have any special effect on the survival of another. The survival of lines on medium conditioned by the same strain was not less than on fresh medium, and in some cases was significantly greater.

Personality disorders, history of trauma, and posttraumatic stress disorder in subjects with anxiety disorders.

The purpose of the study was to examine the association of personality disorders, history of trauma, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in a large sample of subjects with anxiety disorders. Categorical and continuous indices of personality disorders were compared in three groups from the Harvard/Brown Anxiety Disorders Research Project (HARP): subjects with no history of trauma (n = 403), subjects with a history of trauma but no history of PTSD (n = 151), and subjects with a current or past diagnosis of PTSD (n = 68). Subjects with PTSD were more likely to meet criteria for borderline or self-defeating personality disorder than subjects in the other two groups. PTSD subjects also had higher scores on the continuous measures (total number of criteria met) for borderline and self-defeating personality disorder than the other two groups. The findings suggest that a diagnosis of PTSD rather than a history of trauma is associated with borderline and self-defeating personality disorder features. Alternative conceptualizations of axis II features in individuals with PTSD are discussed.

Course of social functioning after remission from panic disorder.

While symptom status and social functioning have been observed to be correlated in many cross-sectional studies, little is known about the time course of change in functioning after a change in diagnostic status. Using data from a large longitudinal study of anxiety disorders, we present analyses of the time course of seven domains of social functioning up to 18 months before and after remission from panic disorder with or without agoraphobia. The effect of remission from panic disorder varies by domain. Four domains show a change in outcome, usually positive, after remission. The presence of major depressive disorder (MDD) affects the course of functioning for two domains. Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) was observed to have effects on five of seven domains. For some domains there is improvement at approximately the same time as change in diagnostic status, although progressive change was seen in others. The amount of improvement was modest on average, indicating that other factors beyond panic symptoms may limit post-remission improvement in social functioning.

Mergers: enhancing human resources management.

The health care industry is experiencing merger mania, but the majority of its current leadership underestimates the importance that significant differences in corporate culture and employee morale play among physicians and others in implementing such organizational objectives as enhancing access, reducing cost, and improving quality of care. The key human resources management issues are discussed that are too often overlooked and frequently sidetracked in the formation of powerful health networks now so prevalent in almost every metropolitan region. The authors conclude that in America's intensely competitive managed care environment, there are a number of critical human resources management ingredients that deal makers need to achieve from these mergers in order to ensure their perceived objectives: (1) paying far greater attention to variations in corporate culture and employee morale; (2) reducing total salary and fringe benefit costs; and, (3) concurrently recruiting and maintaining a qualified and stable workforce that focuses more decisively on clinical-fiscal concerns so as to improve quality of patient care at a lower cost.

A survey of knowledge and attitudes with regard to AIDS among grade 7 and 8 students in Ottawa-Carleton.

With parental consent, we surveyed 942 students in grade 7 and 8 at the Ottawa Board of Education before the introduction of compulsory AIDS education. Television was seen as the most common and credible source of information about AIDS. Parents (by girls) and school nurse (by boys) were also seen as credible sources of information about AIDS. Boys seemed to know more about the transmission of AIDS than girls did. There was high awareness of condoms as an effective method of preventing the spread of AIDS. Avoidance of sexual intercourse as an effective preventive measure was less well known. AIDS education in school should emphasize abstinence as well as barrier methods as effective methods in preventing AIDS, and utilize the media, parents and family in educating students about AIDS.
