Ascending and descending projections to the inferior colliculus in the rat.

The ascending and descending projections to the central nucleus of the inferior colliculus (IC) were studied with the aid of retrograde transport of horseradish peroxidase (HRP). HRP-labelled cells were found in contralateral cochlear nuclei, where the majority of different cell types was stained. Few labelled cells were observed in the ipsilateral cochlear nuclei. HRP-positive neurones were found in all nuclei of the superior olivary complex on the ipsilateral side with the exception of the medial nucleus of the trapezoid body, which was never labelled either ipsilaterally or contralaterally. The largest concentration of HRP-labelled cells was usually observed in the ipsilateral superior olivary nucleus. Smaller numbers of labelled cells were present in contralateral nuclei of the superior olivary complex. Massive projections to the inferior colliculus were found from the contralateral and ipsilateral dorsal nucleus of the lateral lemniscus and ipsilateral ventral nucleus of the lateral lemniscus. Many neurones of the central and external nuclei of the contralateral inferior colliculus were labelled with HRP. Topographic organisation of the pathways ascending to the colliculus was expressed in the cochlear nuclei, lateral superior olivary nucleus and in the dorsal nucleus of the lateral lemniscus. HRP--positive cells were found in layer V of the ipsilateral auditory cortex, however, the evidence for topographic organisation was lacking.

Reciprocal connections between the claustrum and the gyrus sigmoideus posterior in the cat. An experimental study using the antegrade degeneration methods and the HRP retrograde axonal transport.

Following coagulation lesions affecting the gyrus sigmoideus posterior we investigated the termination field of the cortico-claustral projection using impregnation techniques (NAUTA, GYGAX 1954; FINK, HEIMER 1967). Preterminal and terminal fragments of the degenerating axons were identified ipsilaterally on the dorsal and lateral margins of the claustrum dorsale in the rostral half of the nucleus. Labeled neurons were found ipsilaterally within the claustrum dorsale, in the termination field of the cortico-claustral projection rising from the gyrus sigmoideus posterior following injections of HRP (Sigma VI) into the gyrus sigmoideus posterior. There are reciprocal connections between the dorsolateral region of the claustrum dorsale and the cortex of the gyrus sigmoideus posterior. A prevailing number of the HRP-positive neurons of the claustrum are located in the termination field of the particular cortico-claustral projection. The discussion deals with some problems concerning the cortico-claustral and claustro-cortical projections and presents opinions as to the functional significance of the claustrum.

Claustro-neocortical connections in the cat and rat demonstrated by HRP tracing technique.

1) Following HRP injections (Sigma VI) into the sensorimotor, association and auditory cortex of the cat HRP positive neurons were found in the dorsal claustrum (claustrum dorsale, cl. insulare) on the side of the injection and contralaterally. The finding of HRP positive neurons in the ipsilateral and contralateral claustrum is considered an evidence of uncrossed as well as of crossed claustro-neocortical projections. 2) HRP positive neurons in the ipsilateral claustrum multipolar in number the labeled neurons of the contralateral claustrum. 3) The uncrossed and crossed claustro-neocortical projections in the cat are arranged anteroposteriorly. 4) The neurons of the claustrum containing retrogradely transported HRP possess middle size and large perikarya of multiply, pyramidal, triangular and spindle shape. 5) Between the neocortical formation and the dorsal claustrum of the cat there is a cortico-claustral and claustro-cortical interconnection. 6) Following an HRP injection into the frontal parietal cortex of the rat we observed in the ipsilateral claustrum a small number of HRP positive mulipolarr and triangular perikarya.

Efferent neurons of the rat olfactory bulb. (An experimental study using horseradish peroxidase).

1) Two efferent neurone populations - mitral and tufted cells - are present in the main structure of the rat olfactory bulb. 2) The tufted cells, whose axons leave the olfactory bulb, are scattered throughout the whole of the outer plexiform layer and some of them lie in the periglomelural layer. 3) The axons of some of the tufted cells lead to the rostral part of the prepyriform cortex (the anterior olfactory nucleus). 4) Our findings do not indicate that the tufted cells ensure monosynapltic interbulbar connection.
