A daily record was made of defects recognizable at birth or soon afterwards in 10,000 babies born consecutively at Port Moresby General Hospital, Papua New Guinea, between January 1985 and May 1986. The overall prevalence of birth defects in this series was 1.16%. All of the affected babies were singletons, 27% presented with multiple defects, and 14% were stillborn. There was a predominance of male babies in the series as a whole and more particularly in the group of affected babies (female:male ratios 1:1.15 and 1:1.50 respectively). The parts of the body most commonly affected were the limbs, head and neck, and central nervous system. The majority of the mothers originated from provinces neighbouring Port Moresby, although all the provinces were represented. Defects were more common in babies of mothers from island provinces (1.9%) than from highland (1.1%) or coastal/lowland (1.0%) provinces. The mean birthweight for all the babies in the series for whom records were available was 3.03 kg (SD 0.57), and for the abnormal babies 2.86 kg (SD 0.70). The highest mean birthweight was recorded for babies of highland mothers and the lowest for babies of coastal/lowland mothers.
This study prospectively looked at the effect of intentionally buttonholing the Hughes' flap in a series of eyelid reconstruction patients. This simple maneuver increases the versatility of the procedure, with no clinically apparent damage to the flaps or reconstructed eyelids.
Three intakes of medical and dental students to the University of Papua New Guinea were asked to recall traditional explanations of the causes of birth defects. Of 71 students who responded to the questionnaire 56% were from Papua New Guinea. The explanations were grouped into the principal categories of supernatural (39%), environmental (37%) and genetic (14%). The dominant themes were punishment, wrong foods, genetic faults, breaking of taboos, spirits, injuries, drugs, sexual misdemeanours, sorcery and illness. Health workers who counsel parents of babies with birth defects should bear these beliefs in mind and try to reconcile them with scientific explanations for birth defects, particularly as the aetiology of most defects is still unknown.

As science and technology become more sophisticated and with the rapid computation capabilities of the modern computer available, it becomes both possible and economically feasible to scientifically study man and his interaction with his working environment. It is now possible for a person seeking employment to expect and obtain a position which will not be unnecessarily hazardous to his immediate health or have detrimental effects over the long run. Manual materials handling is the contributor of over 400,000 back injuries suffered in the U.S. each year. This research is directed at determining the appropriate operator variables to measure for predicting the permissible weight of lift for three ranges of lift: floor to knuckle height, knuckle height to shoulder height, and shoulder height to reach height. A modified psychophysical procedure was used during which the subjects were instructed to adjust the weight in a tote box to the maximum weight they could lift repetitively without excessive strain or fatique. The task consisted of lifting loads under different conditions of task variables, namely, height of lift, frequency of lift, and load size. Industrial workers as well as students of both sexes were used as subjects. Based on the data obtained, the lifting capacity of the worker was determined for the different ranges of lift. In addition, predictive models were developed based on the operator variables and the task variables investigated.
A new idea helps to explain postenucleation orbital implant extrusion. Implant extrusion is related to would dehiscence followed by conjunctival epithelial downgrowth. A prospective clinical study with pathological data are used to support this concept. A procedure for repair of this problem is described.
