Adverse effects of acebutolol in chronic stable angina: drug-induced positive antinuclear antibody.

Acebutolol, a cardioselective beta-adrenergic blocking agent, was administered for 48 weeks to 11 patients with chronic stable angina in a single-blind trial for determining efficacy and safety. As expected, beta-adrenergic blockade reduced angina frequency and improved exercise performance (p less than 0.001). Three patients developed an antinuclear antibody (ANA) titer, and in two patients a low titer present during placebo treatment increased fourfold. Two patients had joint symptoms probably related to acebutolol administration. Readministration of acebutolol after the ANA returned to negative resulted in a significant rise in ANA titer in two patients tested. The other nine patients tolerated long-term acebutolol therapy without significant side effects.

[Plasmatic glycoproteins and granulomatous reaction].

The first evolution phase of the inflammatory granuloma is characterized from biochemical point of view by an overproduction in the liver of some glycoproteins termed glycoproteins of the inflammatory reaction. The author comments the study of these glycoproteins and of the nature of the endogenic factor producing an increase of their plasmatic concentration. He discusses the physiopathologic significance of the overproduction of inflammatory reaction glycoproteins following the development of an experimental granuloma. The lysosomic enzymes of the leukocytes are thought to play an important role.

Tumor necrosis factor induces acute phase proteins in rats.

Inoculation of WAG rats with recombinant mouse tumor necrosis factor results in a rapid and marked increase in several acute phase proteins in the serum (haptoglobin, alpha 1 acid glycoprotein, alpha 2 macroglobulin) and in the plasma (fibrinogen). We conclude that TNF may play an important role in the inflammatory response in vivo and possibly in the pathogenesis of inflammatory disorders.

Acute-Phase Proteins↗

[Inflammatory reaction proteins. Concept of the protein profile].

The classification and the principal properties of acute phase reactants are given. No acute phase protein constitutes an ideal marker of inflammation. A mini-profile for the monitoring of acute phase reactions is proposed. Orosomucoid and CRP can be measured in neonates while Haptoglobin, Orosomucoid and CRP are helpful in child and adult.
