[Endocrine interrelationships of the thymus (author's transl)].

We have studied the interrelation between the thymus and the hypophyso-adrenal and hypophyso-testicular axes in male rats. In the first part of our work, we have essayed the plasma levels of testosterone, LH, corticosterone and ACTH in neonatally thymectomized or thymectomized and hypophysectomized animals. The results obtained allow us to conclude that there is an indirect action (via hypophysis) of the thymus on the testes and a direct action on the adrenals by the intermediary of one active extract. In the second part of our study we measured hormonal activity of the thymus in hypophysectomized or adrenalectomized or orchidectomized rats. The results obtained show that there is no effect of the testes on the thymus secretion; on the other hand the thymus is under the control of hypophysis and adrenals.

[The passive hemagglutination test in the evaluation of antitetanus immunity].

The conditioned, passive hemagglutination method, which is simple, quick, economical and very sensitive, is suited for large-scale studies in which it is not possible to carry out the in vivo seroneutralization. However, our experience has confirmed that it has certain drawbacks and restrictions: (1) the technique must be applied very carefully and good laboratory training is required. The results obtained by this method vary according to several factors, especially the degree to which the antigen has been purified and its blood carriers, therefore these results are not always consistent; (2) the antibodies found were not a good indication of the degree of protection except at high titers. A study of correlations between HA titers and neutralizing (mice) titers carried out on the basis of 509 double titrations has demonstrated that, whereas they are satisfactory in clearly immune subjects, they show only mediocre results in subjects who are receptive or who are displaying a primary response: a wide range of variation has been observed as well as an optimalization of HA titers, perhaps because of IgM's. Therefore, the HA method, despite its usefulness, cannot provide precise evaluations for: --the amount of protection provided by an anti-tetanus vaccine, --the proportion of protected subjects in a certain group of people, --an injured person's anti-tetanus immunity. We should work to develop in vitro tests which are both sensitive and reliable in terms of the anti-tetanus protection threshold.

[Evidence of the haptenic nature of peptidomannans from two yeasts: Saccharomyces oviformis and Candida mycoderma].

Following the observation that it is not possible to immunize rabbits against peptidomannans, extracted from Saccharomyces oviformis and Candida mycoderma, these glycopeptides have been coupled to bovine serum albumine in order to make them immunogenic. Two methods have been used for the coupling: the cyanogen bromide method and the carbodiimide method. Rabbits have been injected intravenously with these conjugates. Using different serologic technics: agglutination, immunodiffusion, counterimmunoelectrophoresis, immunoelectrophoresis we have shown that only peptidomannan-SAB conjugates prepared by the cyanogen bromide method are immunogenic.

[Early effect of poliomyelitis virus on 5'-nucleotidase activity in HeLa cells].

One of the earlier effects of poliovirus was the maintaining of a high level of Hela cells 5'-nucleotidase activity (maximal efficiency for a virus/cell ratio = 500 ID 50/cell) (ID50:50% Infections Dose). The activity decreased when cells were suspended in the presence of EDTA(EDTA:Ethylene Diamine Tetracetic Acid) and was partially restored by adding 10 mM Mg++ interactions are discussed.

[Experimental cholera in the monkey].

Experimental studies on cholera in Baboons (Papio, P. anubis) and Rhesus Monkeys, have led to unfavourable results. However we have obtained a typical cholera disease in cotton-top Marmoset Saguines oedipeus.

[Local immune response in mouse experimental airborne influenza: immunoglobulin concentrations, antibody levels of immunoglobulin classes and anamnestic response in bronchial washings (author's transl)].

Sera and bronchial washings from normal mice and from mice previously infected with influenza virus were analyzed for their concentration of four immunoglobulin (Ig) classes by the method of single radial immunodiffusion and for their content of specific antibody of these Ig classes by the immunofluorescent method. IgA were not detected in bronchial washings from normal mice. The IgA/IgG ratio was not higher than 0.33 in infected mice. The IgA level increased briefly in infected bronchial washings, but the levels of IgG2 and particularly of IgG1 exhibited a longer and higher increase. The maximal increase of these three Ig classes occurred by the seventh day and might have derived from transsudated serum. IgM was not identified in normal bronchial washings, but immunofluorescence detected IgM in infected washings, which also showed specific antibody in each of the four Ig classes. IgG2 and IgM contained antibody in greatest, IgA in lower concentration. Our results indicate that the most part of bronchial antibody was produced locally, since the ratio of Ig concentration to antibody titre of each Ig class was consistently higher for bronchial washings than for sera. An anamnestic secretory antibody response could not be demonstrated in bronchial washings.

[Evolution of mouse intestinal and blood immunoglobulins after oral route vaccination].

The authors have studied the mice immunoglobulins level after vaccination by oral route with a killed-pathogenic strain of Salmonella typhimurium and an avirulent mutant of the same bacteria. The obtained results show an increase of the intestinal IgA and IgG1 levels and a slighter one of sera IgG between the 10 th and 30 th day following immunization. No correlation was observed concerning the IgM, IgG and IgA levels and the mice protection against a challenge of pathogenic bacteria.

[The effect of a mixture of bacterial ribosomes and membrane fractions of Klebsiella pneumoniae on the development of a transplanted epithelial cancer in rats].

An association of bacterial ribosomes and cell-wall of Klebsiella pneumoniae was shown to reduce the incidence of an epidermoid carcinoma in Sprague-Dawley rats when administered subcutaneously prior the tumoral graft. Mononuclear cells accumulate around the tumor. This association was considered as a non specific adjuvant stimulating the host's intrinsic immunity to tumor antigens.

[Karyometry of thymic reticular cells in the rat. Effect of hydrocortisone and adrenalectomy].

A new process in taxinomic analysis clearly confirmed the presence of three different types of cells (epithelial, hypertrophic and mesenchymal) in the reticular zone of the thymus. The injection of hydrocortisol as well as adrenalectomy induced specific changes in nuclear surfaces of three cell types, while hydrocortisol tented to increase the surface of epithelial and mesenchymal cells, adrenalectomy reduced it, while a modification was seen in the percentages relative of the cell types. In adrenalectomized animals, the effect result was counteracted by injections of hydrocortisol.

[Measurement of potential environmental carcinogens. II. Final determination methods].

As part of a general study of the biological activity of atmospheric micro constituants, we have perfected the methods for the rapid determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The method involves the use of two selective collectors, a high output rotatory freeze-drier, two-dimensional thin-layer chromatography and gas chromatography. A pollution map has been prepared of the Lyons areas showing the atmospheric concentrations of 13 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and their variation with weather and sampling point.

Compared efficiency of a killed vaccine of Salmonella typhimurium, a live vaccine and an antigenic fraction in oral immunization of mice.

In an attempt to determine the best method of immunizing mice by oral route against Salmonella typhimurium, the animals were vaccinated by means of a killed-pathogenic strain, an avirulent mutant of the same bacteria, and a protective antigen removed from the supernatant culture of this mutant. After changing doses of vaccines and the interval between vaccination and challenge, the results obtained show the superiority of the live vaccine and protective antigen with regard to the killed one. Under our experimental conditions enteral vaccination appears to be more effective than the parenteral one.
