Attentional load and visual neglect.

Ten subjects suffering from left unilateral neglect carried out a letter cancellation task under normal conditions, while counting forward, and when generating random numbers, respectively. The index of neglect increased with each of these conditions, though only the normal-random difference was statistically significant. In a second study, four left unilateral neglect subjects and four right brain-damaged controls carried out a simple reaction time task, with stimuli appearing randomly to the left and right, with and without the simultaneous performance of a secondary task (counting backward in threes from 100). The discrepancy between left versus right latencies increased significantly in the secondary task condition for two patients in the neglect group but not for the other two. None of the control group showed this effect. Theoretical implications of these findings for understanding neglect are discussed.

Effect of optokinetic stimulation in patients with visual neglect.

Three groups of subjects, normal controls, right brain damaged patients with and without heminattention, were required to bisect a line in presence of a fixed or a moving background. The stimulus moving horizontally toward the left or the right induced an optokinetic nystagmus with a slow phase coherent with the direction of the movement: together with the optokinetic nystagmus, a displacement of the subjective midpoint, as compared to the condition with a fixed background, was observed in all three groups of subjects. Within the right brain damaged with heminattention the displacement of the line bisection was great for stimuli moving toward the right, but a significant reduction of the left bias was present. In the same group of patients the effect of the optokinetic stimulation was present in a very large proportion of cases and proved to be relatively stable in a test-retest presentation. Theoretical relevance of these data and their potential importance for rehabilitation are discussed.

Press relations: a 14-point plan for enhancing the public image of health care institutions.

Hospital executives often complain about a lack of positive press coverage. As the news media pay increasing attention to health-related issues, health-care institutions and their personnel will be increasingly thrust into positions of interaction with the news media. These interactions can either boost public confidence or cause widespread public distrust. A 14-point plan of practical suggestions can improve press relations and enhance the effectiveness and prestige of the health-care executives.

Are patients with constructional disorders different in visuo-spatial abilities?

Many authors hypothesized a linkage between the anatomical region of damage and the nature of constructional apraxia. In particular, the functional impairment of right brain damaged patients should consist in a visuo-spatial defect. However a large amount of researches have showed impaired visuo-spatial abilities in apraxic subjects respect to non-apraxics, but independently by the side of brain damage. In these researches constructional and visuo-spatial abilities have been often evaluated by methods not comparable among them. Aim of this paper is to verify the constructional performances of left and right brain damaged patients, utilizing exclusively the copy of geometric figures and tasks considered specific in detecting visuo-spatial disabilities. The experimental results show that both left and right brain lesions produce impairments of visuo-spatial abilities. Lastly, the utility of a cognitive approach of study is discussed.
