Can the peptide chain of a pyoverdin be bound by an ester bond to the chromophore?--The old problem of pseudobactin 7SR1.

The structure which had been proposed for the pyoverdin named pseudobactin 7SR1 (Yang and Leong, 1984) differed from those of all other pyoverdins investigated so far: its peptide chain was supposedly linked to the chromophore not by an amide bond originating from its N-terminal amino acid, but rather by an ester bond involving one of the three Ser. It will be shown that the peptide chain of pseudobactin 7SR1 is actually bound to the chromophore amidically by its N-terminal Ser and that it comprises a cyclodepsipeptidic substructure with an ester bond between the C-terminal Thr and the OH-group of the second Ser in the chain.

A new pyoverdin from Pseudomonas aeruginosa R'.

From a Pseudomonas aeruginosa hospital isolate a new pyoverdin was isolated. It is identical with that of Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain R except that in the peptide chain L-Gln is missing.

The pyoverdins of Pseudomonas sp. 96-312 and 96-318.

The structures of the pyoverdins isolated from the Pseudomonas spp. 96-312 and 96-318 were elucidated by spectroscopic and degradation techniques. As observed before for Pseudomonas spp. producing pyoverdins with a C-terminal cyclopeptidic substructure, the two strains can recognize to some extent structurally different pyoverdins as long as they have also a similar cyclopeptidic C-terminus.

[The chemical war in Croatia].

During the present war against the Republic of Croatia, chemical weapons have been used by the Yugoslav Federal Army (YFA) against both civilians and Croatian Army soldiers. The use of irritants was suspected (Vukovar, Bogdanovci and Vinkovci, October-November, 1991; Solin in the Split area, September, 1991) and proved (Velika Gorica in the Zagreb area, September, 1991; Cakovec, November, 1991) in many cases. The use of psychochemical incapacitating agents (Bilje near Osijek, July, 1991), as well as of psychostimulants in YFA own soldiers (Zadar, August, 1991) has been suspected on clinical findings or laboratory tests. The use of acetylcholnesterase inhibitors was proved in one aggressor's diversion (Zadar, Krusevo, July, 1991). Phosphorus from projectiles and fuming boxes caused poisoning and skin burns due to incineration (Vukovar, November, 1991). YFA used the civilian's fear of chemical and biological weapons, throwing untoxic substances all over the Croatian territory. Great ecocide problems have occurred with massive industry devastation (Sisak, Osijek, October, 1991-January, 1992), with enumerous amounts of toxic substances released into the soil and river aquatoria.

Changes in blood cholesterol awareness: final results from the South Carolina Cardiovascular Disease Prevention Project.

We examined changes in five indicators of blood cholesterol awareness in two comparable biracial communities in South Carolina. One community received three years of cholesterol education and intervention activities implemented by a state health department and the other served as a comparison. Cross-sectional, interviewer-administered, random digit-dialed telephone surveys of 11,070 adults 18 years and older were conducted in 1987, 1988, 1989, and 1991. Changes in community levels of knowledge, preventive behavior, risk awareness, and treatment were assessed and compared between the two communities with analysis of covariance techniques that adjusted for age, race, and sex. Significant increases in knowledge, behavior, and risk awareness were observed for most groups defined by race, sex, or age in both communities. Significant net intervention increases between 1987 and 1991 were seen for knowledge of good cholesterol level (+16.4%, P < .001); behavioral action of ever having blood cholesterol checked (+18.6%, P < .001); and knowledge of personal level of blood cholesterol (+16.0%, P < .01). These results suggest that a community-wide blood cholesterol screening and education program can be effective in increasing blood cholesterol knowledge, risk awareness, and preventive behavior, thus serving as part of a public health strategy to lower and treat high blood cholesterol levels in a community.

Tissue polypeptide-specific antigen (TPS) in pediatric malignancies.

Tissue Polypeptide Specific Antigen (TPS) may soon be routinely used as a proliferation marker in adult epithelial tumors. So far, no data have been available on normal or pathologic TPS values in children. Therefore the present study was designed to test the marker for the first time in pediatric malignancies. Using a commercial ELISA kit (Beki Diagnostics), serum TPS levels were determined in 270 healthy children and compared with various benign (n = 143) and malignant (n = 58) diseases. In healthy children, we found an age-dependent distribution of TPS values. Median (M) TPS was found to be 105.05 U/l at birth as determined from umbilical cord blood (n = 96). By the end of the first week, the value rose to M = 164 U/l and then continuously decreased with age until reaching the adult level at around 14 years. Patients with benign masses (n = 29) did not show elevated serum TPS in contrast to children with malignancies. Advanced tumor stage, metastases, and low dignity correlated with an increase in serum values. In many cases, chemotherapy and especially surgical resection of the tumor were followed by a decrease of the previously markedly elevated TPS levels. Severe infections and impaired renal function were however related with very high values and this must be taken into account when judging the validity of TPS measurements. The marker appears useful for the differential diagnosis between benign and malignant processes. While previous investigators described its use exclusively in epithelial tumors of adults, we cannot confirm this specifity in pediatric patients: Our data show that elevated TPS values in children can also be observed in nonepithelial tumors.
