Workforce issues in pediatric dentistry: recommendations of a recent conference.

A recent conference of the California Society of Pediatric Dentists discussed issues surrounding the shortage of pediatric dentists in the state. Several contributing factors were identified and recommendations made regarding ways of working with the dental schools to help increase the number of practitioners. This article frames the problem regarding servicing the state's children and discusses some recommended actions.

Survey of North American air carriers regarding protocol for dental identification of in-flight personnel.

A survey of North American air carriers regarding the protocol for dental identification of their in-flight personnel in the event of a disaster was accomplished in July 1980. Initial evaluation of this survey indicates that few air carriers have such a protocol or forensic odontology consultants. Many of the air carriers indicated the need for the development and implementation of such a protocol individualized for their company. Statistical evaluation of the survey is presented with discussion centered on the role of the forensic odontologist consulting with respective air carriers in establishing such protocols. The survey documents areas of need in such protocols.

Human genetics in dentistry: a summary of three national conferences.

By sanctioning these three annual conferences, the Society of Craniofacial Genetics hopes that the impact of human genetics in dental education and dental practice will be realized by the individual student and practitioner. Human genetics and dentistry will continue to have an impact on each other so that dentistry will meet the challenge with innovative educational programs, advances in dental research, and more importantly, interdisciplinary diagnostic and therapeutic concepts.

Misconceptions about dental treatment for patients with genetic disease.

It is the goal of this conference to define the role of dentistry to the interdisciplinary treatment of genetic diseases. Certainly, with the inclusion of dental disciplines in centers devoted to the diagnosis and treatment of genetic disease, the diagnosis and treatment of secondary craniofacial manifestation and the diagnosis and treatment of genetic disease primary to the craniofacial and oral complex will be greatly accelerated and the many misconceptions about dental treatment for patients with any genetic disease will be significantly reduced.

Accidental hydrofluoric acid burns of the hand.

A case report of accidental hydrofluoric acid burns that involve dermal tissue of the hand is presented. Prompt medical treatment for this accident resulted in minimal disfigurement and minimal paresthesia and disability. Protocols for essential treatment and precautions for personnel working in dental laboratories where hydrofluoric acid is used have been discussed.

An inquiry into the sterilization of dental handpieces relative to transmission of hepatitis B virus.

The transmission of the hepatitis B virus has been implicated in the dental office. The dental profession should be keenly aware of aseptic clinical techniques and effective sterilization procedures. Some dental handpieces can be damaged by conventional sterilization procedures. Alternative procedures are discussed. A review of currently available handpieces and their appropriate sterilization procedures is presented.
