Between 1972 and 1975 (4 years), the Hospital de Ginecoobstetricia "Dr. Ignacio Morones Prieto" of the I.M.S.S. at Monterrey, N.L., reported a birth rate of 106, 771 with 98.35% (105,004) live borns. The morbidity rate was 262.06/1000 live borns and the perinatal mortality was 31.24/1000, divided into antenatal 16.54/1000 and posnatal 14.70/1000. Within morbidity, prematurity and/or low weight occupies the first place, followed by respiratory pathology and afterwards, jaundice, infections, obstetric trauma and finally, congenital malformations. The neonatal mortality reached 14.70/1000 live borns and if we consider gestational age, 22.9% corresponds to immature products, 50.2% prematures and 26.0% to full-term products. In relation to hours of life, we find that 62.50% of the total number of deaths were reported in products less than 24 hrs. of life and 37.50%, in products over 24 hrs. of life.

The gastric volvulus is an infrequent entity requiring surgical treatment in both the acute and chronic cases. The case of an 81-year old female patient attended for an episode of gastric obstruction caused by a volvulus and whose simple stomach radiography showed an image of gastric emphysema is reported. The possible causes of gastric emphysema and its differential diagnosis with emphysematous gastritis are discussed.
Atypical Epithelium is a localized lesion, which has histological and macroscopic findings similar to gastric cancer. In this paper we evaluated 44 cases of atypical epithelium studied and treated in our institute. We found 3 cases of atypical epithelium associated with early gastric cancer. That is 2.66% of the total of all cases. We established the relationship of these lesions and following variables: age, size, localization, macroscopic shape and intestinal metaplasia. We found atypical epithelium in patients older than 50 years old, most of then smaller than 2 cm., localized in antrum and body gastric, and macroscopically were slight elevated lesions. Histologically all of them had intestinal metaplasia.

A comparison of ANP and RAA. In 6 healthy subjects < 50 y, 5 healthy subjects > 50 y, 44 patients with essential hypertension < 50 y, and 41 patients with essential hypertension > 50 y, was performed. ANP values in healthy subjects < 50 y, were means = 44 +/- 7 PG/ml, and means = 87.33 +/- 14 PG/ml in those > 50 y. (P < 0.01). 80% of hypertensives < 50 y, had normal values of ANP (means = 63.8 +/- 10 PG/ml) and 20% high values (means = 131 +/- 6 PG/ml) (P < 0.001). 70% of hypertensives > 50 y, had high ANP values (means = 260 +/- 114 PG/ml) and 30% normal values (means = 75 +/- 5 PG/ml) (P < 0.001). Values for RAA were low or normal in 96% of cases with high ANP values (P < 0.001), and 100% of the cases with high RAA values, had low or normal ANP values. (P < 0.0001). This correlation had an statistically significant value for groups over 50 years (high ANP values, low RAA values) (P < 0.001) and high RAA values with low or normal ANP values in groups below 50 y (P < 0.001). We observed no significant correlation between ANP values and LVH. According to our results, essential hypertensives < 50 y, have low or normal ANP values in the majority of cases (P < 0.001). Essential hypertensives over 50 y. Have high ANP values also in the majority of cases (P < 0.001). As previously reported, an inversely proportional ratio between RAA and ANP was found in our study. The significance of ANP in regulating blood pressure in the elderly is considered.
The aim of this study was to know the prevalence of hepatitis A, B and C markers in an adult population in Gijón, Spain. A randomized, transversal sample according to the census was made in a population between 26 and 65 years of age in Gijón, analyzing demographic, epidemiologic and clinical variables, liver function tests, anti-HAV IgG, anti-HBcore and anti-HCV. Of the 476 individuals included a census error was detected in 26 (5.5%) and 340 (71.4%) were studied. Of these anti-HAV IgG was positive in 210 (61.8%) with prevalences of 17.9% from 26 to 30 years (CI: 95%, 11.1%-27.4%), 54.7% from 31 to 35 years (CI: 95%, 41.8%-67%), 73.6% from 36 to 40 years (CI: 95%, 59.4%-84.3%) and 93% (CI: 95%, 86.7%-96.5%) above 40 years of age (p < 0.001). No other significant variables were found adjusted by age groups. With regard to HBV, of the 331 unvaccinated cases, 35 (10.6, CI 95%, 7.6%-14.5%) presented immune markers and 4 (1.2% CI: 95%, 0.4%-3.3%) HBsAg positivity, with all having normal ALT and no viral replication. Anti-HCV was positive in 1.7% (CI: 95%, 0.7-3.9%), being significantly related to IVDA or tattoos. Hypertransaminasemias were detected in 18 (5.3%) being attributed to virus C (27.8%), alcoholism (27.8%) or obesity (44.4%). History of clinical manifestations of acute hepatitis was collected in 9.7% of the cases with no memory of the episode in 84.3% of the anti-HAV IgG positive cases, 79.5% of the anti-HBcore positive cases and 83.3% of the anti-HCV positive cases. The current curve of prevalence of anti-HAV IgG in the Gijón population varies in the decade from 30 to 40 years in age ranging from values discarding prevaccination screening under the age of 30 to levels of minimum susceptibility to infection above the age of 40. The low prevalence of anti-HBcore underestimates its use as prevaccination screening versus HBV in the population of Gijón. The prevalences of HBsAg or anti-HCV thereby make this area a zone of intermediate endemicity, with around 3% of the population being chronically infected by one of these viruses.

We hereby present a patient suffering several episodes of anaphylaxis (generalized urticaria, dyspnea, wheezing and intense cough) a few minutes after taking different drugs containing paracetamol. Intradermal test with pure paracetamol (100 mg/ml) was positive. It was negative in six controls. Serum specific IgE anti-paracetamol (by RIA) was negative. Anaphylaxis from paracetamol is rare but has been reported. Positive skin test with paracetamol have only been rarely described.
We report a patient who experienced systemic anaphylaxis after several mosquito bites. The skin tests were positive, by prick and intradermal tests, with two species of common mosquito (Aedes communis and Culex pipiens) and also with red midge larvae (Chironomus). Specific IgE against Aedes communis was demonstrated. We carried out SDS-PAGE and immunoblotting with whole body extracts of Aedes communis and Culex pipiens and with red midge larvae. The immunoblotting results showed specific IgE against two proteins of approximately 30 kDa with the extract of Culex pipiens. We also found IgE against one protein of a slightly lower molecular weight with Aedes communis, and against several proteins (the most important with a molecular weight between 30 and 70 kDa) with the Chironomus extract. Cross-reactivity between these insect species was suspected.
