Language functions in patients with multiple sclerosis.

Few studies have demonstrated language impairment in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) compared to healthy controls. The purpose of this investigation was to examine language functions, specifically naming, comprehension, and verbal fluency, in patients with MS and healthy controls to (1) determine if patients with MS demonstrate language impairment, and (2) provide clarification of MS-related language disturbance, particularly in patients with MS of differing courses. Results showed that both chronic-progressive and relapsing-remitting patients with MS performed significantly more poorly than controls on naming, aural comprehension, letter fluency, and category fluency, as well as other language-based cognitive measures. Chronic-progressive patients obtained significantly lower scores than relapsing-remitting patients on the latter three tests. The language disturbance in this MS sample may be partly explained by impairment in other verbal cognitive functions. These findings highlight the importance of assessing language abilities in patients with MS.

Coming out for lesbian women: its relation to anxiety, positive affectivity, self-esteem, and social support.

The present study investigated relations between lesbians' disclosure of their sexual orientation and psychological adjustment. The 499 participants responded to a questionnaire assessing level of self-disclosure, sources of social support, forms of socializing, self-description of sexual orientation, and length of self-identification as a lesbian. The more widely a woman disclosed her sexual orientation the less anxiety, more positive affectivity, and greater self-esteem she reported. Degree of disclosure to family, gay and lesbian friends, straight friends, and co-workers was related to overall level of social support, with those who more widely disclosed reporting greater levels of support. Participants who more widely disclosed their sexual orientation were less likely to engage in anonymous socializing, had a larger percentage of lesbian friends, and were more involved in the gay and lesbian community. Path analyses revealed a mediating effect of social reactions (both initial and current) on the relation between identity development and self-disclosure.

Clinical interventions by psychologists with lesbians and gay men.

A questionnaire that assesses methods of intervention with, and attitudes toward, lesbians and gay men was completed by 139 clinical psychologists. None claimed to use aversion techniques to change sexual orientation. Eleven percent reported use of alternative methods (e.g., psychoanalytic techniques) to change sexual orientation, whereas 5.8% supported the use of aversion therapy for this purpose. Viewing homosexuality as "unacceptable" predicted both the use of alternative therapies and support of aversion therapy to change sexual orientation.

Assaults on staff by psychiatric in-patients. A critical review.

Recent surveys indicate that the frequency of assaults on psychiatric staff by in-patients has increased substantially over the past decade. With patient assaultiveness becoming of greater concern, the need to predict, anticipate, and avoid confrontations with potentially assaultive patients has grown. Regrettably, the vast majority of studies examining the nature, correlates, and predictors of in-patient assaultiveness suffer from methodological problems that limit the validity of their findings.

Concordance between clinicians' and patients' ratings of anxiety and depression as mediated by private self-consciousness.

This study assesses the relations between the ratings of clinicians and psychiatric inpatients on several anxiety and depression measures, as mediated by private self-consciousness. The overall concordance between clinicians' and patients' ratings is quite high, particularly on the depression measures. Levels of private self-consciousness do not appear to mediate concordance of structured behavior or symptom-based ratings of either anxiety or depression; however, there is limited support for levels of private self-consciousness mediating concordance between patients' global ratings of anxiety and clinicians' anxiety ratings.

Consistency of assertive, aggressive, and submissive behavior for children.

The interpersonal behavior of 50 third- through fifth-grade children was assessed over an 8-month period in a wide variety of naturally occurring school activities. The consistency of the children's behavior was found to vary as a function of the child's sex, the class of behavior examined, and the similarity/dissimilarity of the contexts in which the behaviors occurred. Boys demonstrated remarkable consistency in their aggressive expression; 46 of 105 intercorrelations for the aggressiveness dimensions were statistically significant. In general, the consistency of assertive behavior for both boys and girls was unexpectedly high.
