Functional ability profiles for driver licensing. Exemplification by visual profile.

The impaired driver is evaluated for driver licensing according to a functional ability profile. This test correlates, in increments, the physical or medical ability of the driver with the risk categories and the vehicles the driver is permitted to operate. The person is responsible for his fitness to drive. The physician may help in patient evaluation by participation in a medical advisory board or in public education. Guidelines for 11 areas of potential driving impairments were developed in the state of Utah. These principles are illustrated with visual standards.

Dislocation of the Kelman II anterior chamber intraocular lens.

The Kelman II anterior chamber intraocular lens, because of its three-point fixation, may rotate in a counterclockwise direction so that the long arm of the lens is displaced through the peripheral iridectomy and the short arm is dislocated into the anterior chamber. In four of the five cases reported here, a second surgical procedure was necessary to correct the problem.

Gas-permeable cellulose acetate butyrate (CAB) contact lenses.

Gas-permeable cellulose acetate butyrate (CAB) contact lenses may often be worn succesfully by aphakic and other patients who are unable to wear hard contact lenses. The comfort characteristics of the CAB lenses are betweeen those of hard and soft contact lenses. They are much more permeable to O2 and CO2 than soft lenses and thus are less apt to cause edema. They are more flexible and more wettable than hard lenses. This study presents 50 patients who, having had to discontinue wearing hard contact lenses because of discomfort, diffuse central corneal edema, or visual problems, were fitted with CAB contact lenses. Thirty of the fifty were able to wear the CAB lenses successfully.
