The analysis of echographic findings in 34 patients with histologically proven dermoids revealed the following characteristic criteria: A scan sonography shows a roundish, regularly structured lesion of variably high reflectance bordered by a very high, double-peaked surface spike. There is a strong correlation between the degree of reflectivity, the consistency of the dermoid, and the composition of its contents. The B-scan shows a sharply outlined lesion with homogeneously distributed internal echos. Differential diagnoses are discussed on the basis of echographic findings and criteria.

Fat embolism is well known in traumatic skull fractures, chest compression and long bone fractures. Inkeles and Walsh (1975) first described fat embolism of retinal vessels following acute pancreatitis. Fat embolism of ocular vessels in this disease is presumably due to enzymatic destruction of omental tissue. The patient described here fell ill with acute pancreatitis after years of alcohol abuse; he noticed a considerable deterioration in vision. This was a result of fat embolism of the retinal arteries. Multiple cotton wool spots around the optic nerve and in the macular area, combined with some intraretinal hemorrhages, were seen at ophthalmoscopic examination. The pathogenesis of fat embolism of choroidal and retinal vessels following acute pancreatitis is discussed in brief.

A- and B-scan sonography was performed in 83 patients with choroidal detachment; a serous choroidal detachment is characterized by high, bifurcated echospikes and an echo-free subchoroidal space in A-scan sonography. The B-scan presents a typical arc shape. In hemorrhagic choroidal detachment multiple echoes with low to medium reflectivity can be demonstrated in the subchoroidal space. The echographic differential diagnosis of other intraocular diseases is discussed.

After a short introduction about the ERG and EOG different indications for electrophysiological tests are pointed out. By means of ERG and EOG it is possible to distinguish diffuse tapetoretinal degenerations from other ophthalmological, very similar retinal diseases. With the help of the electrophysiological tests one can find the place of damage of the very same retinal disease. Only in combination with other examination methods one can confirm a diagnosis by means of the electrophysiology.

A 22-year-old man presented a typical appearance of pigmented paravenous retino-choroidal atrophy. Fluorescein angiography demonstrated a profound loss of the choriocapillaris in the affected areas. The amplitude of the scotopic and photopic electroretinogramme response was reduced. The electro-oculographic light rise was normal.
