With operating costs ever rising and reimbursements ever tightening, hospitals are looking for ways to cut costs at every turn. The good news is that there are a lot of innovative, imaginative approaches being tried in every area of hospital operations--approaches that don't require massive financial investment, organizational restructuring, or teams of outside consultants. The examples we've found through talking with hospitals across the country are a fair sample of the types of opportunities out there. They range across the entire hospital, from the laboratory to the pharmacy to nursing to waste management to the medical staff to the operating suite. In other words, something for everyone.

Hospitals study old method to treat med waste.

A new application of an old technology is helping a group of hospitals shrink medical waste to a more manageable size. The project is part of a broader effort by the South Carolina Hospital Association to help its member hospitals deal with the growing medical waste problem.

Hospitals look to hospitality service firms to meet TQM goals.

Hospitals that hire contract service firms to manage one or all aspects of their hospitality service departments increasingly expect those firms to help meet total quality management goals as well as offer the more traditional cost reduction, quality improvement and specialized expertise, finds the 1992 Hospital Contract Services Survey conducted by Hospitals.
