Diagnosis of renal tumor by gamma-glutamyltranspeptidase (EC 2.3.2.2).

A urinary enzyme pattern and kidney tissue pattern were investigated simultaneously in 117 urologic patients. In contrast to all other renal disorders only the sixteen malignant tumors of the kidney showed a significant drop of gamma-GT in tumor tissue and urine. So far urinary enzymology has been used only as screening test. Measurement of gamma-GT in urine, however, permits the diagnosis of kidney tumors.

Calcium oxalate stone disease: congenital defect of metabolism?

Kidney tissue enzyme patterns from patients with calcium oxalate stone disease were compared to enzyme patterns from healthy and inflamed human kidneys. In the case of oxalate stone disease there was a significantly decreased activity of the glycolytic enzyme aldolase, resulting in a cumulation of oxaloacetate and of oxalic acid. This decrease of the aldolase activity does not completely reveal the cause of calcium oxalate stones but provides a new aspect to the disease.

[New aspects in the treatment of oxalate lithiasis (author's transl)].

The causes of hypercalciuria and simple diagnostic criteria for the various forms of hypercalciuria are outlined. Indications, effectiveness, limitations, and side effects of cellulose phosphate are described. Emphasis is placed on the biochemical pathogenesis and classification of hyperoxaluria. The problems of measuring and controlling oxalate excretion in patients with hyperoxaluria and calcium oxalate stones are discussed. Succinimide offers a partly successful approach to the reduction of endogenous oxalate synthesis.
