Entry distribution, fission barrier, and formation mechanism of 254102No

The entry distribution in angular momentum and excitation energy for the formation of 254No has been measured after the 208Pb(48Ca,2n) reaction at 215 and 219 MeV. This nucleus is populated up to spin 22Planck's over 2pi and excitation energy greater, similar6 MeV above the yrast line, with the half-maximum points of the energy distributions at approximately 5 MeV for spins between 12Planck's over 2pi and 22Planck's over 2pi. This suggests that the fission barrier is greater, similar5 MeV and that the shell-correction energy persists to high spin.

Evidence for a link between certain psychological factors and the risk of breast cancer in a case-control study. Psycho-Oncologic Group (P.O.G.).

The relationship between psychosomatic characteristics and the risk of breast cancer was studied in women aged from 35 to 65 years, presenting with a clinically palpable breast tumor. To permit a double-blind design, the psychosomatic evaluation obtained by a long open-ended interview was completed before any diagnostic procedure. On the basis of this evaluation, the psychosomatician concluded that the patient was at high or low risk of serious disease. Several other psychological parameters were also recorded, and the diagnosis was then established by cytology or histology. Nineteen of the 77 patients finally included in the study had histologically verified breast cancer. The relative risk (RR) of breast cancer associated with psychosomatic factors was estimated by multivariate unconditional logistic regression, taking into account age at interview, family history of breast cancer, parity and age at first delivery. A significant relationship (p = 0.02) was found between psychosomatic prognosis and the relative risk of breast cancer. Both the low and high risk groups identified by the psychosomaticians had a similar mean age (46.1 versus 47.6 years). Fundamental mental structure played a predominant role in the risk of breast cancer, since no case was observed among the 18 patients with well organized neurosis, and all the 19 malignant tumors were observed among patients with poorly organized neurosis or psychosis (RR = 7.8, p = 0.009). In addition, excessive self-esteem (RR = 10.0, p = 0.02), hysterical disposition (RR = 7.5, p = 0.02), and unresolved recent grief (RR = 8.2, p = 0.05), were found to be significantly related to the risk of breast cancer.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

[Comparative theoretical study of various external fixation devices for the stabilization of distal radius fractures].

In the treatment of comminuted Colles' fractures different types of external fixation devices are used. Three main types are compared: (1) Fixation with two pins in each plane: Ace-Colles' type; (2) fixation with four or more parallel pins in one plane: Wagner/Hoffmann type; (3) fixation with four pins in one plane, two pins on each side of the fracture forming an angle of 60 degrees: ASIF-type fixator. These three types are compared with reference to the different forces that have to be neutralized by the seating of the pin in the bone. To minimize these forces with the aim of preventing pin-loosening, the theoretical results are used as the basis of practical surgical advice: (1) The distance between skin and fixator should be as short as possible. (2) The fixator should be fixed as close as possible to the fracture. (3) The diameter of the pins should be as great as possible. (4) If more than two pins per plane are used (Hoffmann/Wagner type), the pins should be wide apart. (5) If only two pins per plane are used (Ace-Colles Type) the bending stress on each pin is high (6) If more than two parallel pins per plane are used (Hoffmann/Wagner type), the axial forces on each pin are high. (7) The pins should be fixed at right angles to the fractured bone. Pins at other angles do more harm than good.
