US economic revolution. Mapping the future of healthcare.

The revival of the economy in the US holds 2 powerful lessons for its healthcare system: know your customers and focus on their needs. Widespread inefficiency and inconvenience characterise the current healthcare system because it has failed to heed these lessons so far. Making the necessary changes will require substantial modifications by both government and healthcare providers. But, in the end, the result will reshape the future of healthcare.

Fetal ascites associated with ABO incompatibility: case report and review of the literature.

We report a pregnancy complicated by anti-B isoimmunization that resulted in fetal ascites, anemia, hepatomegaly, and polyhydramnios. A previous pregnancy in the same patient was complicated by neonatal ABO incompatibility. A review of the obstetric literature suggests that ABO incompatibility may cause severe fetal anemia, especially in patients with type O blood or a previous history of ABO incompatibility of the newborn.

Management noninformation systems in health care organizations.

The health care manager is often an unwitting accomplice in the creation of noninformation systems because he fails to assume leadership in designing, installing and operating the system. There's also strong evidence that many managers could use a good course in basic accounting.

Can we control health care costs?

The health care system will never go bankrupt, the author of this article asserts. But the expense of maintaining it is putting such a strain on our resources that bankruptcy sometimes seems not so far off. The controls and devices we use, like certificate-of-need requirements and health management organizations, obviously have not slowed the rise in costs. We need to focus our attention on three elements in the picture that can do the most about curbing expenditures: the health care administrator, the physician, and the business organization (the labor union as well as the corporation). The author offers suggestions for action from these quarters.
