Nonlinear terahertz response of -type GaAs.

Excitation of an n-type GaAs layer by intense ultrashort terahertz pulses causes coherent emission at 2 THz. Phase-resolved nonlinear propagation experiments show a picosecond decay of the emitted field, despite the ultrafast carrier-carrier scattering at a sample temperature of 300 K. While the linear THz response is in agreement with the Drude response of free electrons, the nonlinear response is dominated by the super-radiant decay of optically inverted impurity transitions. A quantum mechanical discrete state model using the potential of the disordered impurities accounts for all experimental observations.

Phonon-induced optical superlattice.

We demonstrate the formation of a dynamic optical superlattice through the modulation of a semiconductor microcavity by stimulated acoustic phonons. The high coherent phonon population produces a folded optical dispersion relation with well-defined energy gaps and renormalized energy levels, which are accessed using reflection and diffraction experiments.

Spin filtering in a hybrid ferromagnetic-semiconductor microstructure.

We fabricated a hybrid structure in which cobalt and permalloy micromagnets produce a local in-plane spin-dependent potential barrier for high-mobility electrons at the GaAs/AlGaAs interface. Spin effects are observed in ballistic transport in the range of tens of mT of the external field and are attributed to switching between Zeeman and Stern-Gerlach modes--the former dominating at low electron densities.

Quantized dispersion of two-dimensional magnetoplasmons detected by photoconductivity spectroscopy.

We find that the long-wavelength magnetoplasmon, resistively detected by photoconductivity spectroscopy in high-mobility two-dimensional electron systems, deviates from its well-known semiclassical nature as uncovered in conventional absorption experiments. A clear filling-factor dependent plateau-type dispersion is observed that reveals a so far unknown relation between the magnetoplasmon and the quantum Hall effect.

Fröhlich mass in GaAs-based structures.

The Fröhlich interaction is one of the main electron-phonon intrinsic interactions in polar materials originating from the coupling of one itinerant electron with the macroscopic electric field generated by any longitudinal optical (LO) phonon. Infrared magnetoabsorption measurements of doped GaAs quantum well structures have been carried out in order to test the concept of Fröhlich interaction and polaron mass in such systems. These new experimental results lead one to question the validity of this concept in a real system.

Phase-resolved nonlinear response of a two-dimensional electron gas under femtosecond intersubband excitation.

Strong electric-field transients resonant to intersubband transitions in n-type modulation-doped GaAs/AlGaAs quantum wells induce coherent Rabi oscillations, which are demonstrated by a phase-resolved measurement of the light emitted by the sample. The time evolution of the intersubband polarization is influenced by Coulomb-mediated many-body effects. The subpicosecond period and the phase of the Rabi oscillations are controlled by the properties of the midinfrared driving pulse.

Magneto infrared absorption in high electron density GaAs quantum wells.

Magneto infrared absorption measurements have been performed in a highly doped GaAs quantum well which has been lifted off and bonded to a silicon substrate, in order to study the resonant polaron interaction. It is found that the pinning of the cyclotron energy occurs at an energy close to that of the transverse optical phonon of GaAs. This unexpected result is explained by a model taking into account the full dielectric constant of the quantum well.

Coupled bloch-phonon oscillations in semiconductor superlattices

We investigate coherent Bloch oscillations in GaAs/AlxGa1-xAs superlattices with electronic miniband widths larger than the optical phonon energy. In these superlattices the Bloch frequency can be tuned into resonance with the optical phonon. Close to resonance a direct coupling of Bloch oscillations to LO phonons is observed which gives rise to the coherent excitation of LO phonons. The density necessary for driving coherent LO phonons via Bloch oscillations is about 2 orders of magnitude smaller than the density necessary to drive coherent LO phonons in bulk GaAs. The experimental observations are confirmed by the theoretical description of this phenomenon [A.W. Ghosh et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 85, 1084 (2000)].

Towards quality control in cancer chemotherapy.

A survey of all hospital pharmacies in the former North Western Regional Health Authority has revealed that hospital personnel continue to prepare cytotoxic drugs in suboptimal conditions, despite the widespread introduction of pharmacy cytotoxic reconstitution services. Other concerns include the lack of formal training for medical staff in the administration of these agents and the frequent absence of written procedures for dealing with extravasation and chemotherapy errors.
