[Diagnosis of carbon monoxide poisoning following embalming and exhumation].

Clots of blood, which were found in the cardiac ventricles at an autopsy of an embalmed corpse, were to analyse for carbon monoxide. It was not possible to determine reliably the CO-Hb-content of the blood clots with the known methods. Therefore a new procedure was developed. Carbon monoxide was released by a solution of nitric acid and determined gas chromatographically by a headspace method. In the same vessel the iron-content of the sample was measured after decomposition with atomic absorption spectrometry. This procedure is especially suitable for samples like putrid or heat-clotted blood.

[Urine levels of fenethylline and amphetamine after administration of Captagon].

The limit for detecting fenethylline and its metabolite amphetamine in GLC with N-FID is in the range of nanograms. The elimination of these substances in urine was measured after giving different quantities of Captagon to six volunteers. The concentrations of fenethylline and amphetamine in urine allow to estimate with some limitations time and amount of consuming Captagon for forensic purposes.

Age-related calcium/magnesium ratio in the ligamenta flava.

The Ca/Mg ratio in fibrous connective tissue may be related to its elastic property. Ligamenta flava were obtained from 76 patients during lumbar disc surgery, and Ca and Mg levels were determined by atomic absorption spectrometry. The Ca/Mg ratio was almost constant throughout all age groups. It is concluded that the constancy of the Ca/Mg ratio throughout the lifetime is an integral quality of elastic fibers which may be explained by the biological long half-life of elastin.
