Computed tomography standardization.

Since the body of literature on computed tomography is growing rapidly, some universally acceptable expression for attenuation values should be adopted. In addition, there is controversy as to the manner of viewing CT scans of the torso: some prefer viewing from below, in the same orientation as conventional radiographs, while the authors prefer viewing from above, consistent with most cross-section anatomy texts and current cranial and body CT displays.

Comparative modulation transfer functions of the EMI and Delta scanners.

Spatial resolution of the EMI and Delta computed tomographic scanners has been measured by recording the response to a nylon and water sunburst phantom (Siemens star) and calculating the modulation transfer function at radii corresponding to various spatial frequencies. The resolution appears to be related primarily to the size of the matrix element, and exhibits an upper cut-off frequency somewhat in excess of 3 cycles/cm.

Angiography of nonfunctioning islet cell tumors of the pancreas.

Two cases of nonfunctioning islet cell tumors were documented angiographically and histologically. The manifestations of islet cell tumors, with emphasis on the nonfunctioning type, are discussed, as are the differences between the functioning and nonfunctioning types.

On cats and the territorial imperative.

Of all the medical innovationes of our era, computed tomography is undoubtedly one of the most fascinating, and many nonradiologists are seeking entry into the field. If CT is to remain a radiological specialty, we must act to ensure that our training and experience are adequate to meet this new challenge.

Diagnosis, Computer-Assisted↗

Computed tomography of the pancreas.

Computed tomography (CT) has proven useful in diagnosing inflammatory and neoplastic disease of the pancreas. Neoplasms of the pancreas produce enlargement of the gland and loss of surrounding fat planes. Acute pancreatitis also produces enlargement but correct diagnosis can be made with the clinical correlation. The usefulness of CT in chronic pancreatitis depends upon the state of the disease. Distinction between an inflammatory and a neoplastic mass is not possible on the basis of a CT scan alone. CT is also useful for needle guidance for aspiration biopsy of the pancreas.

AG 60.99: A promising contrast agent for computed tomography of the liver and spleen.

AG 60.99, an emulsion of poppy-seed oil, is proposed as a promising organ-specific agent for computed tomography (CT) of the liver and spleen. This agent not only opacifies the hepatic parenchyma enough to enhance visualization of the bile ducts but also demonstrates the vascular anatomy with smaller doses than those required for conventional studies.

The effects of biological motion on CT resolution.

A variety of periodic and aperiodic psyiologic motions affect the quality of CT images. This study was initiated to estimate what an optimal scan period should be in the design of CT units. Ultrashort scan periods were experimentally similated in the heart and liver to approximate the parameters of future technology.

Computed tomography of the liver.

This work examines the scope and accuracy of CT in the detection of tumors, abscesses, cysts, and parenchymal disorders of the liver. While CT remains an emerging modality, it is shown to be equal to nuclear medicine in detecting mass lesions. It has also been possible to distinguish obstructive from nonobstructive jaundice. Presently, CT is not well suited to the study of cirrhosis. Technological advances in CT design and contrast agents offer promise of significantly improved resolution.

Determination of bone mineral content using CT scanning.

The usefulness and accuracy of CT scanning in the determination of bone mineral content is studied. The radius in 31 patients of both sexes and varying ages was examined using both the Norland-Cameron bone mineral analyzer and the CT scanner. There was reasonably good correlation (r=.72). Ten cadaver bones were then examined with CT scanning and were sent to the laboratory for calcium determination. These results indicate excellent correlation (r=.97). It is concluded that CT scanning represents the only practical and accurate in vivo method of bone mineral content determination.

Computed body tomography.

Only the surface of the diagnostic possibilities inherent in CT imaging has been scratched. Solic organ pathology is readily visible in most instances by computed tomography. With further extension of present knowledge and development of newer contrast agents, the ability of computed body tomography to image a wide range of diseases appears almost limitless.

Selective renal angiography: its value in renal transplantation.

To date angiography has been the most precise diagnostic modality for the evaluation of a transplanted kidney. In the immediate postoperative period angiography can clearly demonstrate the integrity of the vascular anastomoses, and in most cases helps to differentiate between acute tubular necrosis and acute rejection. It is also helpful in the evaluation of the transplant kidney later in the postoperative period, since it can provide some estimate of the vascular effects of chronic rejection and distinguish between hypertension secondary to chronic rejection or renal artery stenosis. Serial isotope techniques may play a more important role in the evaluation of the transplanted kidney in the future, but at present angiography is the diagnostic modality of choice at the Cleveland Clinic.

Scanning and angiography in the diagnosis of pulmonary embolism.

Lung scanning is a safe and simple procedure which, when correlated with chest roentgenograms and clinical picture, is a valuable tool in diagnosing pulmonary embolism. Pulmonary arteriography is a valuable diagnostic procedure and should be employed when serious doubt exists as to the presence or absence of pulmonary emboli. It should also be used whenever surgical treatment is under consideration.

Controversy, alternatives, and decisions in complying with the legal doctrine of informed consent.

The complexities involved in conforming with the legal doctrine of informed consent at present are seemingly limitless. This communication is designed to acquaint the physician attempting to comply with this legal doctrine with an experience gained during the last four years. The major points are aimed at the most frequently asked questions and decisions involved in its implementation. An alternative approach to the question of how and whom to inform is provided, which may make the task easier for those seeking to inform their patients.

Computed tomography of the thorax and abdomen; a preliminary report.

The utility of computed tomography (CT) in the study of the anatomy, physiology, and pathology of the human body has been the subject of considerable interest since the introduction of CT scanning. The advent of a new prototype scanning device has made it possible to examine a variety of abnormalities in the abdomen and thorax in a manner not previously possible. This development permits a remarkable insight into the study of human disease in vivo.
