Psychosocial competence of unselected young adults with sex chromosome abnormalities.

Very little is known about the adult adaptation of individuals with sex chromosome abnormalities (SCA) except for a few reports based upon biased samples of clinically identified patients. This first report from the Denver SCA study on the adult psychosocial adaptation of 36 unselected propositi, identified at birth, shows a continuation of mild psychological and social problems. Psychiatric interviews and self-reported information revealed that adaptation is quite variable, with many of the nonmosaic propositi not faring as well as their siblings, but in a few instances exceeding the success of brothers and sisters. Within this group of SCA subjects a subset demonstrated more marked pathology and a tendency to over-rate their social adaptation relative to the psychiatric interviewer, suggesting that the exclusive use of self-report questionnaires may not provide accurate assessment of psychological characteristics in this and other special populations. The full adult SCA behavioral phenotype has not yet been established but is emerging through additional reports from this and other studies of unselected SCA adults.

Transition from adolescence to early adulthood: adaptation and psychiatric status of women with 47,XXX.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the adolescent and early adult adaptation of a group of 47,XXX women as compared with their siblings, addressing developmental differences in adaptation and psychiatric status. METHOD: Subjects included eleven 47,XXX women and nine female sibling controls. Interviews during adolescence and during early adulthood were semistructured and included a psychiatric evaluation. Four areas of inquiry were (1) relationships with other family members, (2) sense of self-esteem, (3) sexual identity and preference, and (4) responses to life stressors. A DSM-IV psychiatric diagnosis was assigned where appropriate. The Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia-Lifetime version was also administered, and assessments of overall functioning and adaptation were completed. RESULTS: The 47,XXX women during adolescence and young adulthood were less well adapted; had more stress; had more work, leisure, and relationship problems; had a lower IQ; and showed more psychopathology when contrasted with the comparison group. However, most of the 47,XXX women were self-sufficient and functioning reasonably well, albeit less well than their siblings. CONCLUSIONS: This longitudinal study has clarified that previously reported outcomes of severe psychopathology and antisocial behavior in individuals with sex chromosome anomalies are rare and variability in the behavioral phenotype is much larger than originally appreciated.

Attachment and feeding problems: a reexamination of nonorganic failure to thrive and attachment insecurity.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between attachment patterns, degree of security, and feeding problems. METHOD: Three groups of toddlers (age range = 12-37 months) were included: toddlers with infantile anorexia (n = 33), picky eaters (n = 34), and healthy eaters (n = 34). Participants in each group were matched for age, socioeconomic status, gender, and ethnicity. Attachment patterns and degree of attachment security were assessed through the Ainsworth Strange Situation. RESULTS: The infantile anorexia group exhibited a higher rate of insecure attachment relationships than the picky eater and healthy eater groups. When measured on a continuous scale, the infantile anorexia group also displayed a higher degree of insecurity than the other groups. Contrary to previous research, elevated rates of type D attachments were not present within the infantile anorexia group. CONCLUSIONS: Feeding problems and growth deficiencies can occur within the context of organized and secure attachment child-parent relationships. However, insecure attachment relationships may intensify feeding problems and may lead to more severe malnutrition. Implications for the treatment of specific feeding problems are discussed.

Effect of dietary supplementation with vitamin E for lactating dairy cows fed tall fescue hay infected with endophyte.

In a replicated 2-yr study, 32 Holstein cows in midlactation were fed diets containing tall fescue hay that was free of or infected with endophyte and with or without added vitamin E in a 7-wk trial to examine the effect of vitamin E supplementation on symptoms associated with fescue toxicosis. Treatments were 1) uninfected tall fescue, 2) tall fescue infected with endophyte, 3) infected tall fescue plus 1000 IU of vitamin E/d, and 4) infected tall fescue plus 2000 IU of vitamin E/d. Feed intake, milk yield, rectal temperature, and body weight change were not significantly altered by dietary treatment. Concentration of prolactin in plasma was lower for cows fed the infected tall fescue than for those fed the uninfected tall fescue. No differences in alkaline phosphatase content of plasma were detected because of tall fescue or vitamin E treatment. Vitamin E supplementation had no effect on symptoms that were associated with fescue toxicosis in lactating dairy cows fed tall fescue hay that was infected with endophyte.

Depressed mothers: they don't always look as bad as they feel.

OBJECTIVE: The relationship of maternal depression to self-report and observational data was investigated in a sample of depressed (n = 30) and nondepressed women (n = 32) and their 3-year-old children. Depression characteristics (diagnostic subtype/remission status) were related to maternal self-report and mother-child interactions. METHOD: Mothers completed standardized questionnaires and the dyad was observed in the laboratory. Observations were rated for maternal behavior and child attachment. RESULTS: There were no differences between depressed and nondepressed groups on observational measures; depressed mothers' self-report was consistently more negative. Within the depressed group, women with more severe/chronic depression showed behavioral differences but were no different from less depressed women on self-report measures. Women in remission improved for self-report, but not for observational data. CONCLUSIONS: The consequences of maternal depression vary depending on type of depression, severity, chronicity, current mood status, and on how the impact of depression is measured.

Responses of dairy cows supplemented with somatotropin during weeks 5 through 43 of lactation.

Beginning at wk 5 of lactation, 136 cows (34 per treatment) were supplemented daily for 38 wk with 0, 10.3, 20.6, or 41.2 mg of recombinantly derived bST monomer. Cows were obtained from University of Kentucky, University of Minnesota, University of Pennsylvania, and The Ohio State University. Nine cows (4 at 0 mg/d, 1 at 10.3 mg/d, 1 at 20.6 mg/d, and 3 at 41.2 mg/d) did not complete the experiment because of health problems. Data from these cows were included in the reproduction and health databases but not in the production database. Cows supplemented with bST produced more milk, consumed more feed, had lower rates of BW gain, and had improved efficiencies of milk production (conversion of feed and NEL to milk). Additional increases in productivity were modest at 20.6 and 41.2 mg/d versus productivity at 10.3 mg/d of bST. Concentrations of fat, protein, and TS in milk were unaffected. At 10.3 mg/d, bST did not adversely affect reproduction or health.

Copper metabolism of holstein and jersey cows and heifers fed diets high in cupric sulfate or copper proteinate.

Eight Holstein and 8 Jersey primiparous cows (3 d postcalving) and 8 Holstein and 8 Jersey growing heifers were randomly assigned to 1 of 8 treatments in a 2 x 2 x 2 factorial arrangement to compare Cu metabolism between Holsteins and Jerseys and the bioavailabilities of Cu in Cu proteinate and CuSO4. The variables were Holstein or Jersey, Cu supplementation at 5 or 80 mg/kg of DM, and supplements of CuSO4 or Cu proteinate. Jerseys had higher hepatic Cu concentrations than did Holsteins on d 60 (346 vs. 303 micrograms/g of DM). At the high Cu supplementation, hepatic Cu increased more rapidly, and content was higher in Jerseys than in Holsteins by d 60 (520 vs. 439 micrograms/g of DM). On d 0, plasma Cu concentrations were 0.99 and 0.80 microgram/ml, and, on d 60, concentrations were 0.96 and 0.88 microgram/ml for Jerseys and Holsteins, respectively. Overall, serum ceruloplasmin oxidase activity was greater for Jerseys than for Holsteins. Jersey cows and heifers also had greater hepatic Fe (208 vs. 173 micrograms/g of DM) and lower hepatic Zn (82 vs. 91 micrograms/g of DM) than did Holstein cows and heifers at d 60. The bioavailability of Cu in Cu proteinate and CuSO4 was the same. Plasma Cu concentration and ceruloplasmin have limited value as indicators of Cu status and availability to dairy cows and heifers.

A therapeutic preschool for abused children: the KEEPSAFE Project. Kempe Early Education Project Serving Abused Families.

Twenty-four children attended a therapeutic preschool for physically and sexually abused children, the Kempe Early Education Project Serving Abused Families (KEEPSAFE), over a 3-year period from 1985-1988. The program provided early education and therapy for abused children so that they could improve developmentally, socially, and emotionally, with the aim that the children would be suitable to enter the public education system. The therapeutic preschool was combined with a home visitation program for the child's parents or primary caretaker, focusing on improving the quality of interaction between the adult and child. The majority of children made developmental gains at a faster rate than would normally be expected as measured by the McCarthy Scales of Children's Abilities and the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test. Although all 24 children were thought at onset of intervention to be unable to participate in a public school setting, after 12 months in the program over 79% were staffed into the public school system eight (33.3%) into a regular classroom. Three others (12.5%) needed residential care, and two were too young to enter public school. Even though a therapeutic preschool is expensive in terms of the high staff to child ratio needed, it is likely to be beneficial in improving the developmental skills of abused children.

Lecithinase reaction of Staphylococcus aureus strains of different origin on Baird-Parker medium.

Staphylococcus aureus produces one or more enzymes with lipolytic activity, but differences between strains have been reported (Owens and John 1975; O'Toole 1987; Rollof et al. 1987). The biological and biochemical properties of these enzymes have been investigated and results were recently reviewed (Kötting et al. 1984). Baird-Parker medium (Baird-Parker 1962) is a selective medium commonly used for the isolation of Staph. aureus. The presence of egg yolk in this medium permits the detection of two reactions due to lipolytic activity of staphylococci: (1) Lecithinase reaction, a zone of precipitate in the medium surrounding the colonies; and (2) Lipase reaction or 'pearly layer', an iridescent film in and immediately surrounding colonies, visible by reflected light (iridescent sheen or 'oil in water'). In this study, human and bovine strains, previously biotyped according to the scheme of Devriese et al. (1984), were compared for production of a zone of precipitation, lecithinase reaction, on Baird-Parker medium. Bovine and human strains of Staph. aureus were compared for production of the egg yolk reaction (lecithinase reaction) on Baird-Parker medium and the results were related to their biotypes and site of origin of the sample. Human strains and strains biotyped as human biotypes had higher percentage of positive results than bovine isolates and/or biotypes. However, all strains isolated from body sites of heifers produced a positive reaction regardless of the biotype.
