A Monte Carlo study of tests on data originating from quadrat sampling. I: Data from a Poisson distribution.

Computer simulations are used to examine the significance levels and powers of several tests which have been employed to compare the means of Poisson distributions. In particular, attention is focused on the behaviour of the tests when the means are small, as is often the case in ecological studies when populations of organisms are sampled using quadrats. Two approaches to testing are considered. The first assumes a log linear model for the Poisson data and leads to tests based on the deviance. The second employs standard analysis of variance tests following data transformations, including the often used logarithmic and square root transformations. For very small means it is found that a deviance-based test has the most favourable characteristics, generally outperforming analysis of variance tests on transformed data; none of the latter appears consistently better than any other. For larger means the standard analysis of variance on untransformed data performs well.

Cerebrospinal fluid and plasma beta-endorphin concentrations in prolonged infant apnea (near-miss sudden infant death syndrome).

Elaboration of beta-endorphins (beta-ED) is implicated in the modulation of respiratory control in infants. Therefore, beta-ED concentrations were measured in paired samples of CSF and plasma in three groups of infants. Group 1 and group 3 were used as controls. Group 2 infants suffered prolonged apnea of infancy (near-miss sudden infant death syndrome) and were successfully resuscitated. Age and weight (mean +/- SEM) in groups 1, 2 and 3 were 8.5 +/- 3 months and 7.2 +/- 1.4 kg, 3.8 +/- 0.7 months and 5.2 +/- 0.6 kg, and 3.4 +/- 0.9 months and 3.4 +/- 0.7 kg, respectively. CSF beta-ED concentrations were found to be significantly elevated in group 2, 67.8 +/- 4.7 pg/ml, when compared to group 1, 29.8 +/- 3.1 pg/ml, and group 3, 46.5 +/- 7.2 pg/ml (p less than 0.01). No correlation was observed with plasma and CSF concentrations in all three groups. beta-ED may play a role in the pathophysiology of prolonged infant apnea (near-miss sudden infant death syndrome).

The academic pediatrician and the practicing pediatrician. An educational team.

Pediatric education in the contemporary United States requires the cooperation of an educational team of both academic and practicing pediatricians. The latter have been handicapped in their appropriate function as teachers and role models by exposure to students in the wards and clinics of teaching hospitals, the natural habitats of academic pediatricians. Evidence is offered to indicate that practicing pediatricians are significantly more effective as teachers and role models when medical students are exposed to them in their own offices.

Steroids and postoperative analgesia.

The postoperative analgesic requirements of a group of patients receiving high doses of corticosteroids for 48 hours postoperatively were studied. It was found that the opioid requirement of the group was significantly less than that of a control group undergoing similar surgery but not receiving steroids (p less than 0.001). The steroid group required approximately half the opioid dose of the control group. Possible explanations of the effect include the anti-inflammatory action of steroids and competitive inhibition of a common metabolic pathway in the liver.

Changes in the water/lipid relationship during the spawning-run of lampreys.

The relationships between the percentage water and lipid contents of the liver, muscle and gonad have been investigated in adult lampreys. While the relationship between water and lipid in any organ or tissue could generally be expressed by regression lines with a common slope, the intercepts showed a marked tendency to differ sequentially in groups examined throughout the spawning-run period. At any one time, marked differences were found between the slopes relating water and lipid in different tissues or organs.
