Toe amputations and ray resections.

Loss of a part of the lower extremity is an unfortunate complication of diabetes. Indications and general principles of amputation have been established. Distal limb salvage procedures include forefoot amputation alternatives, digital amputations, and ray resections. A variety of risks and complications are associated with these procedures. Postoperative management including prosthetic and accommodative therapy may enhance the successful outcomes of these procedures.

Myositis ossificans: pedal manifestations.

Myositis ossificans traumatica is a benign muscular lesion that is frequently reported in the orthopedic literature, but is not commonly found in the foot. This case report discusses myositis ossificans occurring in the foot. It is most likely subsequent to a heel spur injection received by the patient.

Ray resections in the insensitive or dysvascular foot: a critical review.

The records of 28 patients who underwent 37 ray resections at Hines Veterans' Administration Hospital and Loyola University Medical Center were reviewed. Indications included localized gangrene, osteomyelitis, or both. Underlying medical diagnoses included diabetes, chronic ethanol abuse, arteriosclerosis obliterans, and gout. The overall success rate was only 34%. These results suggest that the usefulness of ray resections as a definitive procedure in such cases may be limited.

Frostbite: an overview with case presentations.

Much of the interest in frostbite has arisen from various military experiences including the Korean war, World War II, and Napolean's battles in Russia and Poland. Historically frostbite has been not only a military problem, but also a problem in high-altitude climbers and the more recently investigated homeless population. However, the physician should not disregard frostbite as only victimizing the poor and indigent. Anyone who is exposed to harsh winter conditions over a long period of time can suffer from frostbite. Many milder cases of frostbite presented to Cook County Hospital in Chicago were simply due to prolonged winter exposure when a motorist's care broke down. The authors present a review of the variants, pathophysiology, classifications, predisposing factors, and treatment of frostbite. Five cases of frostbite will also be presented from Cook County Hospital in Chicago, IL.
