In view of the possible introduction of screening programmes, this study compares oestrogen receptor (ER) levels in a series of women whose primary tumour was detected by screening and an age-matched consecutive series of women whose tumours were diagnosed after symptomatic presentation. Because of missing data and other statistical considerations, the comparison was made using T1 and T2 categories of tumour only. Some differences were found: the distribution of ER levels was significantly different in the two groups, with more extreme values in the symptomatic series; the screening series, however, had more moderate/rich ER levels than the symptomatic group. Tumours of special pathological type (for example, tubular, cribriform, lobular, medullary, and mucoid) were more likely to be ER-moderate or -rich, and there were more of these tumours in the screening series. The relationship of these findings to tumour growth rate is discussed. The study highlights the difficulty of obtaining sufficient tissue for conventional DCC biochemical assays from the small non-invasive tumours found by screening, and suggests that newer alternative methods employing monoclonal antibodies may be required for such types of tumour.

Two cases of eosinophilic enteritis are reported, presenting as large bowel perforation and upper gastrointestinal bleeding respectively. These modes of presentation appear to be unique in the literature.
The incidence of hepatic metastases found at laparotomy for colorectal and gastric cancer amongst Hong Kong Chinese was found to be 16% and 5% respectively. These figures were compared to similar Western series, and the incidence of metastases from gastric cancer was significantly lower in the Chinese population. This geographical variation may have important implications for the interpretation of treatment results for gastric cancer in different parts of the world.

Cell suspensions from 16 tumour-free axillary lymph nodes from breast cancer patients were prepared, using collagenase digestion to free the sinus histiocytes from the fibrous stroma of the nodes. The histiocytic cells so obtained were then characterized using four surface markers: Fc(IgG) receptors, C3 receptors, DR antigen and a macrophage-associated antigen (defined by the monoclonal antibody VEP-7). In addition phagocytosis was assessed using IgG-coated red cells, and both lysozyme and alpha-1-antitrypsin were localized by means of immunoperoxidase staining. The results demonstrated that the majority of sinus histiocytes carried surface macrophage markers, but that a minority displayed phagocytosis and the presence of lysozyme or alpha-1-antitrypsin.
Abdominal thermography was carried out in 50 patients with suspected acute appendicitis. Forty of these came to laparotomy and in 32 the diagnosis was confirmed. Thermography was not found to be useful in predicting those patients requiring surgery.
The organization of cytoskeletal proteins in whole-mount adherent platelets from African green monkeys and normal human volunteers has been studied by SEM, high vacuum electron microscopy (HVEM) and conventional (120 kV) electron microscopy. We describe three distinct organizational zones, the Central Matrix, the Trabecular Zone and the Peripheral Web in spread platelets from both sources. The Central Matrix is an ill-defined superstructure of 80-100 A filaments of short length which enshrouded the granules, dense bodies, mitochondria and elements of the open-channel and dense-tubular systems. The latter, identified through the use of peroxidase cytochemistry with the whole mounts, is an anastomosing network of elongate saccules having diameters of 600-1200 A. The Trabecular Zone, which encircles the Central Matrix, contains 165, 80-100 and 30-50 A filaments in an open lattice of irregular lattice spacing. The outermost region of the cells, the Peripheral Web, is comprised of 70 A filaments organized in a honeycomb lattice with center to center spacing in the range 150-300 A. This pattern for the spread cells is not consistently observed in cells during the early stages of adhesion; therefore, correlations of SEM and TEM observations are made for the various stages of adhesion/activation.
Oestrogen receptor concentration and percentage macrophage content were estimated in 40 human primary breast cancers. Macrophages were identified by Fc (IgG) receptor expression and by the presence of a macrophage-associated antigen. A significant inverse correlation between receptor concentration and macrophage content was found, and this was strengthened by correcting receptor level for tumour cellularity.

A patient's risk of early recurrence after mastectomy for breast cancer has been estimated by using a combination of four prognostic factors. A computer program, designed to calculate the exact probability of recurrence within 2 years of mastectomy, was accurate when tested on 240 patients. A simple scoring system could identify patients at lower and greater risk than any single factor alone.
Four hundred and seventeen patients with operable breast cancer treated by simple mastectomy were randomly allocated to have node sampling or total axillary clearance. There was no significant difference in the incidence of node positivity. One hundred and thirty-five patients had node sampling and were randomized at the completion of this procedure to have axillary clearance or to have no further surgery. All node positive patients who went on to have a clearance had positive samples, confirming the accuracy of the sampling technique.

The macrophage contents of 40 human primary breast cancers were ascertained using three separate macrophage membrane markers. Four prognostic factors (lymph node status, tumour size, histological grade and oestrogen receptor status) were determined concurrently in these mammary carcinomas. No significant relationship was found between the macrophage content of the mammary carcinomas and any individual prognostic factor. When the patients were grouped according to whether they had 0-2 or 3-4 high risk factors, however, the macrophage content was significantly greater in those tumours with the poorer prognosis, regardless of the marker used to enumerate the cells. A high macrophage content, therefore, is not associated with favourable prognostic factors in breast cancer. Indeed, the present study has revealed the reverse to be the case.
The metals zinc, iron, copper, manganese, calcium, magnesium, potassium and sodium were analysed in the livers of 67 Australian infants who had died from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and 29 infants who had died from other causes (non-SIDS). The results were evaluated in relation to medical data and fatty acid composition of the livers. In infants less than 6 months old the liver potassium levels were significantly lower in SIDS than in non-SIDS infants. No other significant differences in metals between the SIDS and non-SIDS livers were found. Zinc, iron and copper levels in infant liver fell with age during the first year.
