[The assessment results of patients with neurootological symptoms (author's transl)].

Neurootological symptoms in 710 patients were assessed by otorhinolaryngological examination, audiometry, vestibulometry, electroencephalography, echoencephalogram, ophthalmological and neurological examination, skull, temporal bone and cervical spine X-rays, electrocardiography, and lumbar puncture. Where abnormal findings occurred further assessments such as brain-scan, vertebral angiography, Xenon clearance and computerized axial tomography were done. Analysis of the case histories showed that there were 45 patients with organic lesions of the brain, 79 with cerebrovascular disease, 68 with postconcussional syndrome, 88 with cervical spine disease, 56 with the Menière syndrome, 36 with disturbed circulatory control, 141 with heretodegenerative hearing loss, acoustic trauma, Bell's palsy or psychosomatic vertigo, and 97 patients who could not be classified. These large numbers of serious problems confirms that it necessary to thoroughly investigate as described patients with neurootological symptoms.

[Synthetics and metals in the middle ear (author's transl)].

A short review of synthetics and metals, which are used in middle ear surgery, is given. The own proceeding in otosclerosis and tympanoplasty is described. Special attention is drawn to the use of ventilating tubes for the treatment of sero-mucous otitis.

[Initial experiences with a new treatment protocol in otorhinolaryngologic cancers].

A new combined modality treatment in advanced squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck, is presented. It consists of surgery, or radiotherapy, followed by adjuvant chemotherapy with MTX and CF rescue, cis-DDP, Bleomycin, Cyclophosphamide, given sequentially. Toxic effects were not very severe and did not cause an interruption of therapy.

Aspergillosis of the paranasal sinuses x-ray diagnosis, histopathology, and clinical aspects.

Aspergillosis is not a rare disease of the paranasal sinuses; more than 80 cases were reported from 1976 to 1982 in the University ENT Clinic at Graz, Austria. Of 59 patients studied, 27 presented almost metal-dense x-ray shadows resembling foreign bodies in one of the sinuses. By means of light and electron microscopic investigations as well as x-ray fluorescence analysis, it can be demonstrated that these areas are equivalent to local enrichment of calcium phosphate in the center of the noninvasive fungal masses in the sinuses. A detailed description of the histopathology of Aspergillus fumigatus is given. For clinical diagnosis, the detection of almost metal-dense x-ray shadows in the absence of foreign-body history in our experience may be regarded as almost certain for aspergillosis of the paranasal sinuses.
