[Valvuloplasty and peripheral angioplasty with coronary dilatation catheters].

The further development of coronary balloon catheters has encouraged their use for dilating small vessels of other organs and stenoses in larger vessels not passable by conventional catheters. The technique was used successfully as a primary intervention in two stenoses of the external carotid artery preparatory to extra-intracranial anastomosis, in four anastomotic stenoses in three patients with Blalock-Taussig anastomosis, and in a subtotal anastomosis of a Cimino shunt. After failed dilatation attempts with a standard dilatation catheter in three patients with four renal artery stenoses and two with subclavian artery stenosis, coronary angioplasty catheters successfully dilated the stenoses. In two infants with severe valval aortic stenosis and left-heart failure, retrograde transluminal balloon dilatation reduced the transvalval gradient from 70 to 30-40 mm Hg.

Non-repetitive AT-rich sequences are found in intergenic regions of Methanococcus voltae DNA.

AT-rich DNA, which constitutes a distinct fraction of the cellular DNA of the archaebacterium Methanococcus voltae, was shown to consist of non-repetitive sequences dispersed on the chromosome and to lack continuous open reading frames in five out of six randomly analyzed cases. Upon subsequent analysis of intergenic regions, AT-rich sequences were again detected. Transcription start points were mapped in front of three open reading frames. The 5' ends of the transcripts were found in variable positions relative to the AT-rich sequences in the different cases. Shine-Dalgarno type sequences complementary to the 3' end of 16S rRNA were discovered at suitable distances from the 5' ends of the genes.

Signal requirements for growth and differentiation of activated murine B lymphocytes.

Mouse B lymphocytes were stimulated at high cell concentrations with goat anti-IgM antibodies, which leads to the induction of B cell proliferation without the addition of any growth factors. After 48 hr, blast cells were purified and cultured at low cell concentrations. Proliferation and differentiation of purified B lymphocyte blasts is then dependent on the addition of either mitogens (e.g., LPS) or certain lymphokines derived from activated T cells or macrophages. One such lymphokine was isolated from supernatants of various activated T cells and characterized by gel filtration as a material with an apparent m.w. of 40,000 to 50,000, similar to BCGF II. It supports the proliferation of the B cell blasts and induces their differentiation into plaque-forming cells. Lymphokines such as BCGF I, interleukin 2, and BCDF gamma could neither maintain growth nor induce differentiation of B lymphocytes preactivated by goat anti-IgM.

[Adrenal myelolipoma. Case report].

Adrenal myelolipomas (a. M.) are rarely occurring, benign, unilateral, hormonally inactive, mostly asymptomatic tumors of the adrenal cortex, consisting of fat cells and myeloid tissue. The pathogenesis is not clear. There is no connection with hematologic diseases, but a strikingly frequent coincidence with chronic systemic diseases and obesity. Myelolipomas of the presacral as well as in the mediastinal space are very rare. Case report of an adrenal myelolipoma removed by lumbotomy.

[Peritoneography for identification of non palpable herniation].

Peritoneography with trijodic contrast medium is a simple but very effective method to identify non palpable herniations causing inguinal pain of unknown origin. It is also very useful for early detection of recurrent herniations after surgery as well as for diagnosis of non palpable umbilical herniations in adipose patients, and for demonstration of herniastions of the abdominal wall after trauma. Technique of investigation and radiological symptoms are described following experience with 154 outpatients. In 25% of these patients during clinical investigation no herniation was found.
