[Epidemiologic study on the etiopathogenesis of multiple sclerosis].

A computer-aided evaluation of those affected with multiple sclerosis (n = 90) with regard to the actually discussed hypothesis on the aetiology of this disease results in 10 significant signs. These signs in their majority support the combined hypothesis of a disturbed regulation of infection and immunity. Frequently, as early as in childhood and youth the upper airways are affected, and this is coupled with a severe course of the disease. The incidence also shows familially and territorially frequent occurrences.

[Hysterical neurosis and its diagnosis (suggestion for a new hysteria scale].

The contribution deals with the differential diagnostic problem presented by hysterical neurosis. After a review of the literature, the author describes a two-stage diagnostic approach. A selected group of patients with the psychiatric diagnosis "hysterical neurosis" was used to check all questions of the MMPI and the FPI for their specificity in respect of hysteria. Due to numerous overlappings, especially between hypochondria and hysteria, in these inventories it is proposed that a new hysteria scale comprising 54 questions be used to delineate more clearly between these two neuroses.

[Clinical contribution to so-called homilopathy].

Twenty cases are presented as a basis for reopening the discussion concerning the homilopathy concept introduced by Kraepelin. The authors describe three different degrees of expression of the homilopathic syndrome. The investigations suggest that homilopathic impediments are much more common than the usage of the term indicates. Possibilities of therapy and prophylaxis are discussed.

[Problem of so-called pseudotumor cerebri].

A brief survey on the concept of the so-called pseudotumour cerebri is given, referring to a great number of synonyms. On the basis of the clinical data of 70 patients with diseases of the intra- and extracranial organs and without a recognisable basic disease, a continous development of the increase in the brain pressure from only subjective complaints to the syndrome of the benign intracranial hypertension in an extended sense and the most severe disease pictures with a lethal outcome are discussed. For lethal courses the term of malignant intracranial hypertension is suggested and the importance of computer tomography in the differential diagnosis and supervision of unclear brain pressure increases is pointed out.

[Prognosis, chronification and therapeutic relations in unsatisfactorily improved secondary faulty developments with cardiovascular affections].

In a group of 36 neurotic women with unsatisfactory psychotherapy results, prognostic criteria, chronifying factors in the course, therapeutist-patient relations, test data, and social and clinical criteria were ascertained for an assessment of success by neutral examiners and statistically correlated. The significance of common prognostic criteria is relativised and the therapeutist-patient relation is determined as an influencing factor through which prognostic and chronifying factors are translated into the therapeutic process. The relevance of the paranoid scale of the MMPI as an objective prognostic sign is particularly noted.

[Neuropathologic findings after electrotrauma in dogs].

The authors report the results of morphological studies of the brains of dogs on which transcerebral or peripheral electrotraumata were inflicted and which were killed immediately after completion of the experiment. Subarachnoidal and intracerebral hemorrhages were observed in the two groups of experimental animals. Hemorrhages were much less intense in those cases in which so-called peripheral injuries were inflicted on the animals. However, it is reasonable to expect late and permanent functional and morphological damage to the central nervous system to be produced even in those cases where electric current is not caused to flow directly through the brain. This should be carefully considered in any attempt to determine the consequences of electrotraumata.
