The author studied electromyographic findings and surgical exploration results in 37 women and 63 men operated upon for nucleus pulposus prolapse. EMG investigations of paravertebral muscles were found to be useful in the diagnosis of motor root lesions. A correlation was found between the size of prolapse and the area of denervation potentials in paravertebral muscles. On the other hand, it was found that these investigations do not indicate accurately the level of nucleus pulposus prolapse.
