[The current status of avian ophthalmology].

Ocular diseases in birds are very rarely investigated. Increased keeping of often very expensive caged birds makes it necessary for veterinarians in practice to deal with the problems of ornithoophthalmology. Fundamental physiological and anatomic differences between the mammalian and the avian eye, interspecies variables and general problems in handling do not allow a simple transfer of knowledge of mammal ophthalmology to birds. Therefore, it is necessary to find differentiated, species-orientated solutions in investigation as well as suitable treatments of ocular diseases in birds. An update on ornithoophthalmology is given.

[The practice of injection and blood collection techniques in bird patients].

The correct performance of injection and blood collecting techniques is of great importance in pet bird medicine. Besides general hints for carrying out the various techniques possible mistakes and their avoidance are shown by listing the steps and by photographic documentation. The correct handling of the patient is vital for the avoidance of any untoward incidents.

[Amazon pox at an import station].

Within this case report from a Bavarian import unit clinical appearance, diagnosis and treatment of Amazonapox infection is described in detail.

[Cardinal symptoms of polydipsia/polyuria in birds].

The relatively nonspecific symptom complex of polydipsia/polyuria can be based on a large number of causes either infectious or non-infectious in nature. These causes are listed and described in more detail. In addition, diagnostic methods and possible forms of therapy are discussed.

[Epizootiology, clinical aspects and therapy of Pasteurella multocida infection in bird patients after cat bite].

Since early 1986, fatal cases of Pasteurella multocida infection following cat bites have been seen regularly among avian patients at our institute. The problems of the epizootiology of this infection are discussed on the basis of research during the last three and a half years. By evaluation of collected data from clinical examinations, autopsies, bacteriological and biochemical diagnosis of isolated strains from birds and cats the possibility of transmission via cat bite is discussed as well as the status of cats and birds in an epizootic chain. Even birds with trivial wounds caused by cats must be classified as emergency patients. The risk of an infection after a cat bite is about 56%. For treatment of a Pasteurella multocida infection Doxycycline should be used.

[Several surgical operations in animal husbandry for healthy birds required or implemented by animal welfare regulations].

Trimming of the comb, devocalisation, trimming of claws, pinioning and caponisation of birds are procedures, which are often requested or carried out by keepers of animals. Surgery of this kind, however, has far-reaching consequences for the affected animal. A well considered range of indications is a basic requirement for the performing of the mentioned surgical procedures by a veterinarian.

[The removal of foreign bodies in different birds].

Following problems are shown using slides: --ingrown rings and their removal with follow-up treatment, --the removal of fishhooks, especially in swans, --the removal of projectiles from the bird's body, --the removal of lead slivers from the digestive tract of parrots as well as the follow-up treatment, --the removal of gold chains, plastic tubing and other "toys" from the intestine. Gastrotomy in the parrot is described.

[Epidemic deaths of wild birds after Aeromonas hydrophila infection].

From July to September 1988 high mortality of waterfowl at several locations was observed. Suspicion of botulism was expressed. However in all cases an Aeromonas hydrophila infection was diagnosed. Pathogenesis and clinical signs of these two diseases with similar symptoms are briefly discussed.
