Evolutionary conservation of the transcribed spacer sequences of the rDNA repeat unit in three species of the genus Aspergillus.

We have cloned and sequenced the two intervening transcribed spacers in the rDNA repeat unit of three Aspergillus species--A. nidulans, A. awamori and A. wentii. The A. wentii and A. awamori spacers are almost identical and share a high degree of homology with the A. nidulans spacers. All spacers have a high G-C content (66%-76%) and the potential of forming complex secondary structures, which may indicate that they play a role in the maturation of pre-rRNA molecules.

[Possibility of potato growing in the central part of the Katowice province in the aspect of population exposure to harmful substances].

The high consumption of potatoes in Poland may be connected with the risk of introduction of considerable amounts of metals into the organism of humans and animals even in case of low grade contamination of these vegetables. Levels of lead and cadmium were determined in potato samples taken at 16 points in the Province of Katowice. The results of determinations served for estimation of the degree of exposure of the population to these elements. In most samples the concentrations of these metals exceeded the safe level as recommended by the WHO. The content of these metals was determined in whole potatoes, peelings and peeled potatoes, and in the residues after alcoholic fermentation. The obtained results were used for formulation of prophylactic suggestions for reducing the exposure of humans and domestic animals to these metals.

Cadmium

A personal dust sampler simulating variable human lung function.

In a prototype of a new personal dust sampling system (PDS) the speed of air sampling in the breathing zone is related to the pulmonary ventilation rate of the wearer, using the correlation between pulmonary ventilation and pulse rate that is monitored by electrodes fastened on the sampler wearer's chest. The method of calibration and the results of dust chamber and field measurements are presented. The prototype of the new sampler was tested in a lead and zinc smelting plant against a routine stationary sampler and typical personal sampler. Personal exposure using all the above mentioned devices has also been assessed, and the PDS gives satisfactory results in use.

[Health conditions of workers exposed to CS-2 in xanthate plants].

26 men, aged 22-57, with various length of employment in xanthate plant, where they have been exposed to CS2, were subjected to laboratory examinations aiming to find out the effects of this substance on their health state. These studies had been produced by measurements of CS2 concentration in the air of work-posts, lasting for 7 months. This allowed to evaluate the exposure of the subjects and to compare the concentrations with the MAC, actually valid. The obtained results, both in the subjects blood and urine, did not unequivocally indicate any noxious effects of CS2, despite the fact that MAC in the air of working rooms was twice surpassed.
