High-resolution proton nuclear magnetic resonance characterization of seminolipid from bovine spermatozoa.

The high-resolution one- and two-dimensional proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) characterization of seminolipid from bovine spermatozoa is presented. The 1H-NMR data was confirmed by gas-liquid chromatography-mass spectrometric analysis of the partially methylated alditol acetates of the sugar unit, mild alkaline methanolysis of the glyceryl ester, mobility on normal phase and diphasic thin-layer chromatography (HPTLC), and fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry (FAB-MS). The structure of the molecule corresponds to 1-O-hexadecyl-2-O-hexadecanoyl-3-O-beta-D-(3'-sulfo)-galactopyranosyl- sn-glycerol.

Analysis of trace pollutants in the air by means of cryogenic gas chromatography.

The utilization of a laboratory-constructed programmable, cryogenic gas chromatograph (KEDBOR1OIR1) for use in air pollution studies is presented. The instrument (J. Chromatogr., 89(1974) 1) is modular in design and incorporates many commercially available components as well as a few "scratch-built" parts. A temperature control range of --100 degrees C to plus 300 degrees C, with five programmable rates, is possible using this particular instrument. The instrument is capable of dual-column and dual-detector operation. Data have been gathered from laboratory-prepared samples as well as from samples obtained from an air pollution study in the Philadelphia area. Small amounts (ppm or less) of the gaseous hydrocarbons and the common inorganic gases (NOx,SOx,CO, CO2, H2S, COS) are detected and quantitated. Calibration curves for each gaseous component have been constructed and the analyzed samples compared to them for quantitative data. Data and information from the use of several different columns, sampling sites and their locations are presented. Experimental data agreed favorably with the current findings and discussions of air pollution problems.

Contributions to an environmental impact statement.

Assessment of the effects on land use, social, economic, historic and natural environment as a result of highway construction are discussed. Predictions of these effects on the various categories twenty years hence are also presented. Information of this type is a necessary segment of an environment impact study soas to conform to EPAand Department of Rransportation (DOT) guidelines.

Ambient air pollutant analyses-integral part of an environmental impact study.

Data for the major pollutants; carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, photochemical oxidants, suspended particulates, and total hydrocarbons, have been presented. In addition, lead analysis and a justification for no sulfur oxides data are also discussed. This study was an integral part of an Environmental Impact Study carried out by the Chemistry Department and the Institute of Transportation Studies a Villanova University. Some of the pollutants were found to cause a situation of concern; namely, photochemical oxidants, suspended particulates and nitrogen oxides. On the otherhand, carbon monoxide and total hydrocarbons were found to be well below limits set by the EPA. Although no standards are set for lead in ambient air, the data showed very low concentrations of this pollutant in our particulate samples. Since oxides ofsulfur are more an industrial, rather than transportation, pollutant little relevance could have been found for the type of study performed.
