Hexamitiasis in a laboratory mouse colony.

An acute fatal disease occurred in a mouse colony at the authors' institution. The disease caused 50% mortality among weanling mice, and was characterized clinically by depression, rough hair coat, and distention of the abdomen. The most prominent gross lesions were watery fluid and gas in the small intestine. Numerous organisms identified as Hexamita muris were seen in direct smears of the intestinal fluid. Microscopic and electron microscopic examination revealed the same organisms in the intestinal crypts, within the mucosal epithelium, and in the lamina propria. Treatment with dimetridazole controlled the clinical disease but did not eliminate the infection.

Encephalitozoon sp. in the blue-masked lovebird, Agapornis personata (Reichenow): first confirmed report of microsporidan infection in birds.

A microsporidan tentatively classified as Encephalitozoon sp. on the basis of structure and tinctorial qualities was identified in tissues from a group of blue-masked lovebirds. Agapornis personata (Reichenow). The organism was present in renal tubular epithelial cells, hepatocytes, bile duct epithelial cells, and intestinal epithelial cells. Focal hepatic necrosis occurred around clusters of the organisms but inflammation was minimal or absent in the other infected tissues. Attempts to infect laboratory mice with the organism were unsuccessful. Ultrastructural features were compared with those of E. cuniculi of mammals.

Transmission of Histomonas meleagridis to domestic fowl by means of earthworms recovered from pheasant yard soil.

Four cockerels and two poults were fed ground earthworms recovered from soil where ring-necked pheasants (Phasianus colchicus) were raised. All 4 cockerels showed mild signs of histomoniasis, and numerous Heterakis were recovered at necropsy. One of the 2 poults died, with typical gross and microscopic lesions of histomoniasis. Heterakis eggs recovered from the 4 cockerels were used to infect an additional 12 cockerels and 11 poults.
