Historical perspectives of osteochondrosis.

A famous historian, Toynbee, wrote that history was based on challenge and response. Certainly the development of our understanding of osteochondrosis dissecans in the dog fits this description. From the first indications of the disease to our present understanding took about 60 years. The times were right, for during this period improvements in anesthesiology, radiology, and surgery, along with the demands of clients coupled with the presence of skilled trained investigators and sharp practitioners, brought about a continually increasing mass of information about a new disease entity. It is proper for us to give credit to those gifted individuals who patiently worked to unravel each bit of information. Our current challenge is that much more remains to be done.

Principles of conservative fracture management: splints and casts.

Splint and cast application is an often overlooked form of fracture management in the current era of internal fixation and external skeletal fixation. External limb splintage is a "tried and true" method; however, there are specific indications for the use of this technique. Splints and casts have a place in our armamentarium of fracture management and when appropriately used under the correct circumstances, fracture healing is expected to be similar to that observed using other means of fracture fixation.

Primary lymphedema of the hindlimb in the dog.

Congenital lymphedema was diagnosed clinically and confirmed radiographically in five dogs. In all dogs, hindlimbs were affected with painless pitting edema at birth or shortly thereafter. The absence of popliteal lymph nodes and lymphatic hyperplasia or lymphatic hypoplasia were detected by lymphangiography or necropsy (or both). Improvement was obtained by long-term bandaging in Robert Jones splints in one dog and by surgical excision of the affected superficial fascia and subcutaneous tissue in two dogs. The remaining two dogs were euthanatized after lymphangiographic studies and were necropsied to confirm the diagnosis.
