An increasing number of head and neck cancer patients are undergoing radiotherapy along or in conjunction with other treatment modalities. Radiotherapy extending over a period of weeks produces a variety of clinical manifestations. This article discusses the physiological changes that occur due to radiotherapy to elucidate the changes seen clinically.

This study investigated the in vitro shear strength of three porcelain repair systems. Glazed and roughened porcelain surfaces were evaluated. The repair systems tested were Fusion, Scotchprime, and Ultra-Bond. Porcelain cylinders were made. Half of the cylinders were wet-sanded to a flat, nonglazed surface and the remaining cylinders retained a smooth, glazed surface. Specimens were subjected to a shear force parallel to the composite/porcelain interface by use of an Instron Testing machine. Statistical analysis (at the 0.05 confidence level) showed significant differences in mean bond strengths related to the porcelain repair systems and the surface texture.

An extracranial anterior point of reference, namely, a standard line level (bubble gauge), was used to capture the true horizontal plane relative to NHP. NHP relative to true horizontal plane was found to be convenient and easy to locate and record. The vertical fluctuation of NHP varied from as narrow as +/- 0.18 inch to as wide as +/- 0.34 inch. This esthetically coordinated plane of orientation may provide the dentist and laboratory technician a mounting that more closely simulates the clinical situation. The proposed technique may be beneficial for those patients requiring difficult prosthodontic and maxillofacial reconstruction, as well as those requiring combined orthodontic, oral surgery, and prosthodontic treatment.
The compressive strength of various artificial stones were tested using air, oven, and microwave oven drying methods to compare the three for drying refractory casts. The microwave oven can be used for rapid drying of refractory casts in removable partial denture construction. However, it should not be used for drying extremely wet casts.
Many factors can contribute to the fracture of complete dentures. This article has identified some of these factors and presented some methods that can greatly reduce or eliminate functional complete denture base fractures when used with a thorough diagnosis and treatment plan.
