Current initiatives in open learning.
This article considers the needs for open learning in pre- and post-registration nurse, midwife and health visitor education. Examples of institutions using open learning are provided and the English National Board's current initiatives in relation to open learning packages are detailed. The Board's future initiatives demonstrating its commitment to the support of open learning are also described.

Evaluating research and development at the ENB.
This article describes the English National Board's view of its research and development strategy since the inception of that strategy in 1990. Outlining the educational policy which is underpinned by this strategy, the author highlights some of the many studies undertaken. For each example, a brief résumé of the study is given along with the implications for practice and the changes in practice which were implemented as a result.
