Retention of prefabricated posts with dental adhesive and composite.

Sixty-three No. 4 Dentatus threaded posts were cemented in extracted teeth and tested for tensile strength. The cementing medium was Silar composite alone or in combination with a conventional bonding agent or Scotchbond dental adhesive, or both. Results indicate that: Retention was greater when the posts were cemented with the Silar composite preceded with the application of Scotchbond. Retention was less with Silar composite alone or combined with a conventional bonding agent. Scotchbond is suggested for use as a bonding agent when cementing Dentatus posts with composites.

Adhesion of composite materials to enamel: comparison between the use of acid and lasing as pretreatment.

Acid-etch is presently the accepted method for adhesion of composite materials to enamel. In this investigation, we used the laser for pretreatment of the enamel instead of acid. The adhesive (tensile) strength was measured by the Instron unit and statistically analyzed. Results demonstrated that bonding strength following laser pretreatment is comparable to that of acid-etch.

The Behavior Observation Instrument: a method of direct observation for program evaluation.

The background and development of a multicategory direct observation system, the Behavior Observation Instrument (BOI), is described. This time-sampling procedure for recording the behavior of persons is demonstrated in several treatment settings and the results applied to issues of program evaluation. Elements that have prevented direct observation from being widely adopted, such as costs, manpower, and training requirements, are systematically analyzed. A basic psychometric analysis of the instrument is used to determine optimum frequency and duration of observation intervals as well as observer agreement. The results imply that direct observation methods, once assumed by some to belong to the special province of the single-subject design, can be used to assess the effects of programs on groups of psychiatric clients in an efficient and economic manner.
