Psychometric evaluation of performance in diabetes mellitus.

Two-hundred and fourteen diabetics and 343 controls were studied using a psychological test battery (LPSU-KOLN). Out of these samples, 147 pairs matched for age, sex, and level of education were selected. Diabetics were classified as juvenile onset diabetics (JOD, n = 112) and maturity onset diabetics (MOD, n = 35). The performance was evaluated in four dimensions: Factor I: speed of reaction; Factor II: memory-concentration; Factor III: visual perception; and Factor IV: quality of performance. The data were statistically analyzed using a multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA). The speed of reaction of both types of diabetics was significantly lower than of that of controls. The abilities in memory-concentration tasks were also decreased in diabetics in general, particularly in MOD. The visual perception and the quality of performance of diabetics were not different from their controls.

Psychopathology and psychotherapy in chronic physically ill patients.

Within the scope of psychosomatic medicine somato-psychic diseases are of great importance theoretically as well as practically, especially in view of problems dealing with the patient's attitude toward his illness and his coping with the disease. Among the somato-psychic illnesses chronic physical diseases are of primary interest. The knowledge of their general and specific psychological and psychopathological symptoms are of great importance for a better understanding of these patients and in view of a favourable direction in therapy. This is demonstrated in the form of extracts with three groups of the chronic physically ill: (1) hemophiliacs; (2) patients on regular hemodialysis treatment and following renal transplantation, and (3) diabetics.

[Allergic reactions following dextrane infusions (author's transl)].

14 allergic reactions to dextran 60 and dextran 75 are reported. In 8 patients the peripheral pulse became impalpable; Medical history and clinical examination did not reveal any predisposition. Histamine liberation is to be discussed. Antihistamines did not protect against allergic reactions of colloid plasma expanders. All the patients were treated with prednisolone and fluids. After rapid infusion of Ringer-lactate and plasma protein solution to an amount of 2000-2775 ml adequate circulation was restored.

A seasonal association between SIDS deaths and kindergarten absences.

Data from linked birth and death certificates from the State of Oregon were used to determine the monthly distribution of deaths from sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) for the years 1976 through 1984. The monthly number of SIDS deaths increased in winter and decreased in summer, when schools usually are not in session. Absences from kindergarten were determined from school records for the period 1979-84. School absences, previously shown to reflect incidence of predominantly infectious diseases, were found to be positively correlated with occurrences of SIDS. The role of ordinarily nonlethal infections in occurrences of SIDS has been established by history, histology, and viral isolation. The authors concluded that the seasonality of SIDS is related to the seasonality of respiratory infections and that the seasonality is influenced by respiratory infections being spread from school children to infants during periods when schools are in session.
