[Radiation-hygienic evaluation of vegetables and potatoes grown after soil irrigation with water containing artificial radionuclides].

Radiation and hygienic appraisal of vegetables cultivated under various kinds of irrigation is presented. Critical radionuclides are determined along with major vegetable products owing to which the great amount of radionuclides is absorbed. Contribution of vegetables and potato cultivated under irrigation into the total body intake of radionuclides by local residents has been evaluated.

[Radiation safety of the population and agricultural production industry (standardization of the radionuclide content of agricultural products)].

The topical problems of standardization of the radionuclide content in food products and radiation control in agricultural production have been considered. The fundamental principles for establishing the permissible radionuclide concentrations in foodstuffs and acceptable contamination levels of agricultural land and products were justified.

[Analysis of risk factors for the formation of internal exposure dose to the rural population and effectiveness of preventive actions in agriculture in the long-term after the Chernobyl Accident].

The regularities in the formation of internal exposure doses to the population living in the Chernobyl affected areas are described. The factors responsible for changes in doses are identified and their significance is assessed. The effects of countermeasures on the radiation situation variations are estimated. The need for an addressed application of countermeasures is shown with taking into account types of rural settlements based on the radioecological factors responsible for dose formation in the population.

[Basic results of work on ameliorating the consequences of the accident at the Chernobyl Atomic Energy Station in the area of agricultural radioecology druing the period 1986-2001 (on the 15th anniversary of the accident)].

The review has summarized the main results of the amelioration work after the Chernobyl accident in the field of agricultural industry. Regularities of radionuclide behaviour in agrosystems and effectiveness of the protection in agriculture were considered. The tasks of cleaning-up radioactive contamination in the distant periods after the accident were discussed.

[Aerial contamination of agroecosystems following the accident at the Chernobyl Nuclear plant].

The regularities of the aerial contamination of agricultural ecosystems are described in the early period after the Chernobyl NPP accident. The aerial contamination is shown to be caused by the development of the above-ground biomass of plants and fallout characteristics. A specific coefficient of primary retention varied between 0.46 and 1.2 m2 kg-1 for 137Cs. The first half-life period varies from 9.7 to 13.4 days. The second period varies from 46.2 to 52.2 days. It has been found that parameters of aerial contamination from the Chernobyl accident well correlate with the results of observation in the period of global fallout.

[Methodological approach to countermeasure options in rural settlements in the long terms after the accident at the Chernobyl NPP].

A methodological approach for the justification of rational countermeasure options in agricultural production in the long term after the Chernobyl NPP accident is presented. The decrease in the scale of countermeasures in 1993-1996 in the most affected regions has resulted to a rise in internal exposure doses to the population. A need for further application of protective measures in the long term after the Chernobyl NPP accident is estimated. It has been shown that the remediation of some rural settlements should be continued till 2045.

[Effectiveness of measures directing to lowering the dose of radiation to residents of rural settlements in the extended period after the accident at the Chernobyl atomic energy station].

Justification of the application of countermeasure options in the long term after the Chernobyl accident is presented exemplified by a number of rural settlements located in areas with different fallout density. Protective and rehabilitation countermeasures are ranked based on the criterion such as cost of 1 man.-Sv. Estimated are time periods when the need in countermeasures will persist for settlements located in areas with different contamination levels and internal dose contribution to the overall dose.

[Radiation protection of the environment: anthropocentric and eco-centric principles].

The second half of the XX century was dominated in the field of radiation protection of the environment by the anthropocentric concept stated by the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP). According to this concept "if man is adequately protected by radiological standards then biota are also adequately protected". At the end of the XX--beginning of the XXI centuries in the area of area of radiation protection of nature an ecocentric strategy is beginning to develop where emphasis has swung to the protection of biota in their environment. Inadequacy of ICRP's anthroposentric concept is reported. Issues are discussed such as ecological dosimetry, nonequidosal irradiation of man and biota, criteria for estimating radiation induced changes in biota and man, as well as the need to harmonize permissible exposure doses to man and biota. An urgent need is stressed to develop a single (synthetic) concept of radiation protection which simultaneously ensures protection of human health and biota well-being in their environment. This concept is to be based on the recognition of the integrity of socio-natural ecosystems where man and biota are considered as a unity.
