Tissue response to subtotal retinectomy in a rabbit model.

We surgically removed lenses and as much retina as accessible in one eye of six pigmented rabbits which were followed for up to four months postsurgically. Clinically, pre-RPE membranes were noted to form within the first weeks after surgery, and eyes remained hypotensive in the absence of notable inflammation. Morphologic studies demonstrated a variable response of RPE, ranging from atrophy to hypertrophy and hyperplasia. Pre-RPE membranes appeared to arise from both the RPE as well as from tags of peripheral retina and were of two morphologic types: spindle cell-collagenous membranes, and a highly cellular glial membrane. Bone formation within collagenous membranes was seen in four of six eyes studied.

Light-induced maculopathy and cystoid macular edema.

We present two patients with paramacular burns induced by the operative light microscope. In one case there was associated cystoid macular edema. Of the 34 total reported cases of paramacular burns, there have been only two cases of cystoid macular edema. Thus, although the total number of reported cases of light-induced maculopathy is small, this disorder does not appear to predispose to cystoid macular edema. Loss of visual acuity is mainly caused by the proximity of the burn to the fovea.

Subretinal neovascularization complicating laser photocoagulation of diabetic maculopathy.

A subretinal neovascular membrane was diagnosed in a 60-year-old black woman 1 year following uneventful laser treatment for diabetic maculopathy. The membrane originated from the edge of a photocoagulation scar. It is believed that the neovascular membrane represents a complication of laser photocoagulation of diabetic maculopathy.

Scleral buckling with intraocular air injection complicated by arcuate retinal folds.

Three cases of bullous superior rhegmatogenous retinal detachment were surgically repaired by circumferential scleral buckling and intravitreal air injection. Unusual retinal folds were found postoperatively. Unlike the well-recognized radial retinal folds classically associated with circumferential buckling of bullous retinal detachments, the folds reported herein originated from the "end" of a hard silicone exoplant and traversed an arcuate course corresponding to the lower meniscus of the intravitreal air bubble. Although the macula was involved in all three cases, the retinal break was unaffected.
