[Plasma levels of lipids and apoprotein in a group of middle-school students 11-14 years of age: preliminary data].

Plasma lipids and apoprotein A and B levels were measured in 63 children, of both sexes, in the age range 11-14 years. The children have been subjected to a blood drawing after a 12 hour fast at least. Statistical analysis proves that total cholesterol (TC) is positively correlated with triglycerides (TG), HDL cholesterol (HDL) with apolipoproteins A (Apo A), apolipoproteins A (Apo A) with apoproteins B (Apo B). In the end we confirm the utility of determining plasma lipids and apoproteins to estimate lipidic risk for atherosclerosis in pediatric age.

[Serum T3, T4, FT3, TSH and TBG in Turner's syndrome].

Turner's syndrome was originally reported as sexual infantilism, short stature, webbed neck and cubitus valgus. Subsequent investigations, however, have disclosed many other abnormalities both in chromosomal and physical features occurring in this syndrome. An increased prevalence of Hashimoto's thyroiditis in patients with Turner's syndrome has been well documented and molecular defects of the TBG have been described. In our study we examined serum T3, T4, FT3, FT4, TSH and TBG levels in 18 girls with Turner's syndrome, in 18 healthy control girls and in the parents of both groups. We reported significant elevated levels of T3 and FT3 in the Turner's group (P 0.01). We did not find any quantitative abnormalities of immunoreactive TBG in the same patients.

[Correlations between individual and familial variables in Turner's syndrome].

In 20 cases of Turner's syndrome (10 with complete X monosomy, 10 with partial X monosomy or mosaicism) aged 3.47 to 15.5 years, the stature of the individual cases and their parents were evaluated. A significant frequency of short stature in mothers (25% below--2.0 S.D.S) has been observed, with a significant difference compared to the mean female stature of the general population. No significant difference has been observed on the stature of fathers. There was a closer correlation with mother's height (r = 0.65, p = 0.001) than with father's height (p = 0.07).

Effect of albendazole in experimental toxocariasis of mice.

Fifty-five mice were each infected with 800 embryonated eggs of Toxocara canis. Beginning on the second day of the infection, one group received a single 9 mg dose of albendazole every 24 hours for an eight-day period while a second group received 3 mg of albendazole every eight hours for the same period. On the tenth day of infection, mice in each treatment group and their corresponding controls were sacrificed, and the presence and motility of T. canis larvae in the brain were determined. With both therapeutical procedures the administration of albendazole reduced the number of larvae which reach the brain. However, for the same total dose, the administration of the drug every eight hours yielded results which were significantly superior to those produced by administering a single dose every 24 hours, reducing both the number of larvae in the brain and their motility.

[Nimesulide: multicenter clinical study for evaluation of its therapeutic effect in odontostomatology].

A Polycentric Study was carried out so as to assess the anti-inflammatory effectiveness and pain-killing activity of Nimesulide in Odontostomatological practice, in 78 patients suffering from alveolo-gingival and parodontal abscesses, consequences of tooth extraction, suppurated radicular cysts, dysodontiasis, osteitis, periodontitis, periostitis. The results obtained confirm the anti-inflammatory and analgesic effect as well as the good tolerability of this drug.

The influence of serum substitute Ultroser G in toxicological evaluations in mammalian cells in vitro.

The influence of serum substitute Ultroser G on the toxicity of the antiparasitic ivermectin was evaluated in CHO and IB-RS-2 pig kidney cells. The growth of both cell lines was slightly slower in medium with Ultroser G than with serum. However, the growth of both CHO and IB-RS-2 cells exposed to 5 and 10 micrograms/ml ivermectin decreased to a higher extent when they were maintained in medium with Ultroser G than with serum. The treatment with 20 micrograms/ml caused the death of the cells cultured with the serum substitute within 6 hr; the growth of CHO cells ceased after 24 hr in medium with serum, while IB-RS-2 cells were still slowly growing after 72 hr. The morphological changes caused by the drug were observed under light microscope.

[Importance of Streptococci and in particular of the Enterococci in urinary tract infections].

Out of 1336 bacterial strains isolated by urine cultures, nearly 23% resulted to be Gram-positives of which 11.8% are Enterococci and 3% Streptococci of Group B. The isolated Enterococci resulted to be sensitive mostly to amoxicillin and resistant to cephalosporins and tetracycline. The authors consequently agree with recent recordings of an accentuated incidence of Enterococci on infections of the urinary tract.

Giant axonal neuropathy. Endocrinological and histological studies.

A case of giant axonal neuropathy (GAN) in a boy of 4 years and 6 months, is reported. Nerve conduction velocity (NCV), EEG and CT scan indicated both peripheral and central nervous system involvement. Intestinal absorption tests did not reveal vitamin B12 malabsorption; the endocrine situation was found to be substantially normal. The clinical picture was not modified by 18 months cyanocobalamine administration followed by 2 months therapy with prednisone. Electron microscopic (EM) examination revealed longitudinal and opposing grooves (pili canaliculi) in the hair and bundles of neuro-filaments in the myelinated and unmyelinated nerve fibre axons in sural nerve. EM of conjunctiva and skin revealed masses of intermediate-sized filaments within mast cells, fibroblasts, melanocytes, endothelial and Schwann cells. These findings confirm the hypothesis that GAN is a generalised abnormality of cytoplasmic microfilament formation, probably linked to an unknown disorder of protein metabolism.

Cytotoxic effects of wheat gliadin-derived peptides.

The peptic-tryptic-cotazym (PTC) digest, obtained from bread wheat gliadin by simulating in vivo protein digestion, was more active than the PTC-digest of durum wheat gliadin in reversibly inhibiting HEp-2 cell proliferation and in increasing cellular acid phosphatase. Colony-forming ability of the cells was not affected by treatment with both bread or durum wheat gliadin peptides. The peptic-tryptic (PT) digest of bread wheat gliadin also showed agglutinating activity of HEp-2 cells.
