Diversity of human rotaviruses detected in Sicily, Italy, over a 5-year period (2001-2005).

Rotavirus infection was detected in 39.9% of 1030 children hospitalized with gastroenteritis in Palermo, Italy, in the period 2001-2005. Rotavirus strains belonging to G1, G4 and G9 types were continually detected, with G1 being the most common type in 2001, 2002 and 2004. A G4 epidemic occurred in 2003, while G9 was predominant in 2005. G2 strains displayed a low prevalence, except in 2003. G3 rotaviruses accounted for 2.7-17% of the gastroenteritis episodes in 2002-2005. The P-type of a subset of 166 strains confirmed the circulation of the usual G/P combinations, but single G1P[6], G9P[9] and G6P[9] strains were also found.

Leonardo Fioravanti (1517-1588): a barber-surgeon who influenced the development of reconstructive surgery.

Surgery in the Middle Ages was practiced by individuals belonging to the guild of barbers, with no basic medical education. The transformation into a scientific branch of medicine began in the sixteenth century. In this process, a great role was the one played by Leonardo Fioravanti. He was a Doctor in Medicine graduated from the University of Bologna. A controversial man, he was also an innovation in many fields of medicine, such as prevention of diseases, pharmacology, therapy, etc., and he was a surgeon himself. On the way back from one of the last Crusades, he visited the Vianeos brothers in Calabria, and he was able to learn from them the technique for reconstructing the nose that had been devised by Antonio Branca in the previous century and still practiced only by barber-surgeons. He published his experience in a book that probably inspired the contemporary, Gaspare Tagliacozzi, Professor at the University of Bologna, and allowed him to become acquainted with this kind of reconstructive surgery. Tagliacozzi understood the value of the method described by Fioravanti and transformed a barber-surgery technique into a remarkable chapter of scientific surgery by divulging in the academic circles the principles of the pedicled flap, which have been the basis for development of modern plastic surgery.

A morphogenetic classification of craniofacial malformations.

A new classification of malformations of the face and cranium is proposed, based on embryologic studies and observations concerning a great number of patients seen by the authors. First of all, one should distinguish between cerebral craniofacial (with brain and/or eyes involved) and craniofacial malformations. Craniofacial malformations may be characterized by dysostosis and by synostosis. Malformations with dysostosis may be produced by transformation as well as differentiation defects. Synostosis is always caused by a differentiation defect. A new nomenclature is introduced.

Carotid endarterectomy utilizing the exclusion clamp.

Carotid endarterectomy is useful in the treatment of the uncomplicated pre-stroke patient. Use of the exclusion clamp makes possible a short period of carotid occlusion without the use of either internal or external shunts. Forty-two patients were operated on using this technic.
