Vitamin E is a complete tumor promoter in mouse skin.

The dorsal skins of 6-8 week old female SENCAR mice were initiated with a single application of 10 nmol of 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene (DMBA) and subsequently promoted twice/week with topical applications of vitamin E (dl-alpha-tocopherol, 80 mumol/treatment). Vitamin E from two separate commercial suppliers was tested. For comparison, a group of similar mice, also initiated with DMBA, was promoted twice/week with the known tumor promoter 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13- acetate (TPA, 2 micrograms/treatment). Papillomas appeared 39 and 50 days respectively after promotion began with vitamin E from the two different sources, as compared with 32 days in the group receiving TPA promoted. Hundred per cent of TPA-promoted animals and 92-96% of the vitamin E-promoted mice developed tumors. A maximum of 15 papillomas/animal appeared in the TPA-promoted mice. The two vitamin E preparations were somewhat less effective than TPA and showed different relative potencies, producing about seven and 12 papillomas per animal respectively. Unlike TPA, vitamin E showed very little ability to produce an inflammatory response in skin. To test whether initiated cells that did not appear as papillomas after vitamin E promotion were still viable, and had proceeded past stage I of promotion (conversion), the group that developed 12 papillomas/animal from vitamin E promotion was further promoted with mezerein, a stage II promoter. In this group, the papilloma frequency then increased to approximately 17/animal. The animals were followed over the course of their lifespan and monitored for skin carcinomas. In the TPA-promoted group 64% of the mice developed carcinomas, while the two vitamin E-promoted groups showed 48 and 60% incidence respectively. These results indicate that topically applied vitamin E acts as a complete tumor promoter in DMBA-initiated mouse skin, with an efficiency approaching that of TPA. Since vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant, they also suggest that reduction of cellular oxidant levels may trigger the tumor promotional process, and it may therefore be prudent to avoid repetitive or prolonged topical exposure of human skin to antioxidants like vitamin E.

Utility of Doppler color flow imaging for identification of femoral arterial complications of cardiac catheterization.

Doppler color flow and two-dimensional ultrasonographic images of the femoral region were obtained in 25 patients referred for suspected vascular complications of cardiac catheterization. Five patients had normal findings, while 23 abnormalities were noted in 20 patients, including seven femoral arteriovenous fistulae, 12 femoral pseudoaneurysms, and two patients with both femoral arteriovenous fistulas and pseudoaneurysms. Operation confirmed the abnormalities diagnosed by color flow examination in 15 of 20 patients. Three patients refused operation and one was not felt to be a surgical candidate due to high anesthetic risk. One patient died preoperatively and postmortem examination confirmed the color flow diagnosis. Etiologies of the arterial complications included percutaneous aortic valvuloplasty (6), coronary angioplasty (4), and arterial or both arterial and venous catheterization (10). Doppler color flow imaging is a reliable technique for identification of vascular complications following catheterization procedures.

An outbreak of salmonellosis amongst holidaymakers in Madeira, July 1988.

In July 1988, 20 of 49 tourists from Northern Ireland became ill with gastrointestinal symptoms while on holiday in Madeira and four were admitted to hospital. Salmonella enteritidis was subsequently isolated from eight members of the party. Epidemiological investigations implicated fried and/or scrambled eggs as the vehicle of infection.

CT evaluation of retroperitoneal hemorrhage associated with femoral arteriography.

CT was used to assess retroperitoneal hemorrhagic complications temporally related to femoral artery catheterization in eight patients. In six patients with retroperitoneal hemorrhage caused by an angiographic complication, CT showed a high-density soft-tissue mass originating at the inguinal vessels and extending into the ipsilateral retroperitoneal spaces. In the other two patients, CT not only excluded significant bleeding from the catheterized vessel but determined an alternative diagnosis (hematoma secondary to anticoagulation and pneumatosis intestinalis due to ischemic bowel). CT findings prompted surgery in three patients.

Improving the concurrent validity of the Bender-Gestalt test.

30 individuals diagnosed as showing Korsakoff's psychosis, 30 as paranoid schizophrenics and 30 as normal controls, each had the Bender-Gestalt test administered by four different methods. All four showed good concurrent validity. The so-called perfect method which requires the individual to compare his drawings on the standard administration with the Bender-Gestalt test cards and to redraw the design eliminating errors, showed some potential for improving the predictive validity of the Bender-Gestalt test.
