Admissions to hospital following parasuicide in one city over eighteen years exhibit a cyclical variation apparently synchronized with the lunar quarters. The effect would only account for approximately 0.7 out of the average of 46 parasuicides per 100,000 adults per lunar cycle (95% CI 0.6-0.8), and fails to reach statistical significance.
Sixty-four new cases of childhood epilepsy were randomly assigned to either carbamazepine, phenytoin or sodium valproate, and were assessed with cognitive tests before medication and three subsequent times over a year. Carbamazepine in moderate dosage adversely affected memory, but sodium valproate and phenytoin did not.
The present study measured naming reaction times of normal subjects to unilaterally presented pictures corresponding to vocabulary levels of less than 5.5, 9.5 - 10.5, and greater than 18.0 years of age. An analysis of variance of latencies showed a significant interaction between visual fields and stimuli. Post hoc tests were interpreted to suggest that the normal right hemisphere was capable of performing certain differential picture encoding operations up to 10.5 years of age and not beyond. Also, unlike the left hemisphere, the right hemisphere does not appear to be organized on a developmental hierarchy, which corresponds with the clinical literature.
Two women with insulin-treated diabetes who presented with hyperventilation in the setting of generalized anxiety disorder and panic disorder, respectively, are reported. The symptoms of hyperventilation and hypoglycaemia proved indistinguishable even after successful treatment with a behavioural approach including explanation, breathing retraining, and relaxation. With diabetic patients a cognitive strategy is complicated by conditioning to think in terms of diabetic control and an inability to safely reattribute symptoms to faulty breathing habit because of the risk of ignoring hypoglycaemia.
The presence of tardive dyskinesia in a sample of 43 patients with schizophrenia and 37 psychopaths who had been hospitalised for many years and exposed to large amounts of medication was assessed while testing their cognitive function. Subjects who showed no evidence of abnormal movements performed significantly better on the test of delayed recall, but there were no differences in performance on any of the other tests of cognitive function used. Multiple regression analysis revealed that age and the total lifetime dose of neuroleptic medication received (in chlorpromazine equivalents) were the only variables to predict the Abnormal Involuntary Movement Scale score, although a large amount of variance in this variable was unaccounted for. The duration of treatment with neuroleptics did not predict AIMS score.
In order to solve problems associated with the unit dose drug distribution system at LDS Hospital, the decentralized pharmacist concept was tried. The pharmacist uses a master medication cart to fill new drug orders at the nursing station and a computer video terminal at the nursing station to check patient profiles. The reactions of nurses and members of the medical staff to the decentralized pharmacist are described.

The educational attainment of 100 school-phobic youngsters was compared to that of 100 other psychiatric patients, using the reading quotient as the main measure. Age and IQ were allowed for. RGs were, on average, higher in the school phobic group than in the other subjects, except in a small number of younger children of high IQ. Additional comparisons with another group of psychiatric patients and with the general population,using regression equations, failed to provide any evidence of poor educational attainment in school phobia.
