Synovial histopathology of behçet's syndrome.

Synovial tissue obtained from 7 patients with Behçet's syndrome and 7 patients with early rheumatoid arthritis could not be distinguished under ordinary light microscopy when examined blind. A wide spectrum of features was seen in both diseases, and it is suggested that these may reflect severity and duration as much as the nature of the arthritis. Electron microscopy also failed to illustrate any distinct features of Behçet's syndrome, but immunofluorescent studies indicated consistent deposition of IgG.

Bronchial disease in ulcerative colitis.

Ten patients with ulcerative colitis, all of whom were non-smokers, presented with a productive cough. In six, the chest radiography was normal and cough was the only symptom; three of these patients had a minor obstructive ventilatory defect on testing. Four patients complained of exertional dyspnoea and had both an abnormal chest radiograph with bilateral pulmonary shadows and a mixed obstructive and restrictive ventilatory defect. Bronchial epithelial biopsies from four patients (two with and two without pulmonary shadows) revealed basal reserve cell hyperplasia, basement membrane thickening, and submucosal inflammation, changes more usually associated with cigarette smoking. Inhaled beclomethasone diproprionate relieved cough in seven patients. The occurrence of airway epithelial disease in association with ulcerative colitis raises the possibility of a systemic mechanism affecting both bronchial and colonic epithelium. It does not seem likely that sulphasalazine was the cause of the pulmonary syndrome in these subjects.

Primary human breast carcinomas transplantable in the nude mouse.

Of 19 primary human breast carcinomas implanted into noninbred female nude mice, 3 produced transplantable tumors. Membrane components specific for human mammary epithelial cells were demonstrated in the cells from heterotransplants even after four or five passages in nude mice.

Physical activity and blood pressure responsiveness to the cold pressor test in normotensive young adult African-American males.

The aim of our study was to examine whether there is an association between blood pressure reactivity to the cold pressor test in African Americans who engaged in different levels of physical activity. We examined the systolic pressure, diastolic pressure, mean arterial blood pressure, heart rate, cardiac index, total peripheral resistance, and forearm blood flow during a two-minute cold pressor test in 15 aerobic, physically active and 15 physically inactive, normotensive young adult African-American males. Peak oxygen consumption varied as a function of physical activity, and was significantly higher in the physically active than in the physically inactive subjects (54.5 +/- 1.5 vs 36.8 +/- 0.7 ml kg(-1) min(-1)) (P<.05). During the cold pressor test, consisting of immersing the foot in ice water, the change in cardiovascular responses were similar between the physically active and the physically inactive groups. These results suggest that regular physical activity may not contribute to an attenuated blood pressure response to behavioral stress of the cold pressor test in normotensive young adult African-American males.
