[Iatrogenic diabetes mellitus (side effects and interactions of drugs during clinical diabetes mellitus (author's transl)].

After mentioning insulin deficiency diabetes in animals produced by drugs such as Alloxan, Diazoxide or Streptozotocin only drugs are discussed, which are used in elderly patients and may either provoke diabetes mellitus (or temporary hyperglycemia) or may change the clinical course of diabetes. In the first group endocrine products such as corticosteroids, estrogens, somatotrophic hormone, thyroid hormone, glucagon, somatostatin, catecholamines and hormones with anabolic effects are listed. The second group comprises saluretics, salicylates, amphetamines, pentamidine, nicotinic acid and its derivatives, beta-receptor blockers and finally laxatives. Hypopotassemia alone can also be the cause of hyperglycemia. Speaking of the sulfonylureapreparations, their interaction with alcohol, with phenylbutazone, with some sulfonamides and the effect of the sulfonylureas on peripheric insulin-receptors is discussed. In case of severe diabetic vascular disease the use of anticoagulants may lead to hemorrhages. If such an hemorrhage occurs in the eyes, it may lead to blindness. In diabetic nephropathy the use of phenacetine and its derivatives should be substituted by another medication. This review is not at all complete but should only show some of the problems in the treatment of elderly diabetic patients.

[The symptoms of diabetes mellitus in different age groups (author's transl].

The most important forms of diabetes mellitus are the juvenile onset diabetes (JOD) with primary lack of insulinsecretion and the maturity onset diabetes (MOD) with a progressive lack of insulinsecretion. In the higher age groups one can also find diabetesforms, which need high daily insulin doses, such as cases with insulin-antibodies, with insulin antagonistic hormons and with insulin allergy. Another form of diabetes mellitus in the old age group needing high daily amounts of insulin is due to the reduction of insulin receptors in the peripheric cells. The connection of diabetes mellitus with other risiko-factors and the possibility of virusinfections producing diabetes mellitus are discussed.

[Influenza immunization, clinical results and serological tests (author's transl)].

207 patients of a geriatric department were immunized against influenza with either tween-ether-split-vaccine or subunit-vaccine in a double blind study. For 6 months the following data were daily registered: rest in bed, fever over 38,5 degrees C, rhinitis, laryngopharingitis, bronchitis, pneumonia, enteritis, medication with antibiotics or chemotherapeutics. In cases with fever over 38,5 degrees C blood tests were taken for serological examination. The immune response against influenza A was excellent in both groups, the titer was higher in the subunit group, only one patient showed influenza infection. The immune response against the type B Hongkong was not satisfactory in both groups. The clinical data showed a significant lower incidence of rhinitis, laryngopharingitis and bronchitis in the group immunized with the tween-ether-split-vaccine. This effect was more distinct within the first 3 months after the immunization than within the second 3 months.
