[Does the average dust concentration modify the critical dust dose leading to silicosis?].

This article is based on the established fact that there is a relationship between the probability of the occurrence of silicosis and the inhaled amount of dust, the latter being represented by the concept of "dust dose" which is a product of dust concentration multiplied by the period of exposure. On investigating the "dust dose" values in 179 former coal miners in the East German town of Zwickau, however, we found that the "dust dose" principle does not apply to low to medium dust concentrations. We can now outline our idea of the origin and development of silicosis as follows: Below an initial threshold value of the "dust dose" it is improbable that silicosis will develop. Beyond that value, i.e. at medium dust concentrations, the time that elapses between the beginning of exposure and the onset of the disease is constant, namely, 20 years. However, the "dust dose" values that trigger the disease vary greatly. For dust concentrations beyond a second threshold value matters are as originally expected: the dust dose being constant, the disease will set in the earlier, the higher the dust concentration. To visualize these effects, a smoothing mathematical evaluation method was combined with a variant of the t test.

[Assessment of stress on the spine using a biomechanical model in relation to time studies].

The loading of the lumbar spine in the working process can be judged by the loads to be raised or carried and the bending of the body, a biomechanical model serving as the basis of calculation. Up to now our knowledge on the length of work loading the body in the working process in insufficient, that's why statements on the amount of heavy labour causing harm to the body can scarcely be given. The results of detailed time studies done with welders and mechanics in the field of heavy mechanical engineering and the building of installations were: postures loading the lumbar spine were taken for less than 1 minute on average, in most cases up to 20 seconds, and altogether they had a share in the shift of 16% on average.

[Evaluation] of chronic dust-induced bronchitis as an occupational disease].

Recommendations for announcement and legal recognition of dust induced chronic bronchitis are presented. They rely on practice and aim for improvements and support for decision finding in medical reports. Basic criteria for legal recognition are intensity and duration of exposure, temporal relations between development of disease and exposure as well as type and grade of disease. The problem of demarcating non-occupational factors of influence is discussed. Legal recognition of dust induced bronchitis as an occupational disease can be achieved in a a special procedure.
